Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail of Greed

Three weeks later, the nursery was filled with the soft scent of lavender and baby powder. Maya was sleeping peacefully in her bassinet, her little chest rising and falling in rhythmic perfection.

Downstairs at the kitchen table, the atmosphere was far less tranquil.

Eleanor Campbell and Marcus Vance sat across from me, surrounded by mountains of financial audits, forensic spreadsheets, and transcripts from the Department of Justice’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.

"It’s worse than we thought, Emma," Eleanor said, tapping a red-lined ledger with the tip of her pen. "Daniel didn't just siphon money from Reed Architecture to buy that penthouse. He was acting as a financial conduit for Olivia Bennett’s PR agency."

Marcus leaned forward, his face dark with suppressed fury. "Olivia’s firm was contracted by three major city developers to handle community outreach and lobbying for city zoning variances. Those developers were funneling illegal political kickbacks through Olivia’s agency. She used Daniel’s firm to 'wash' the money under the guise of architectural consultation fees."

I poured tea into three mugs, my hands steady. "So the three million dollars Daniel borrowed against the Riverfront project wasn't just to buy a penthouse. It was an advance to cover a shortfall when one of Olivia’s kickback schemes fell through?"

"Precisely," Marcus said. "The federal prosecutors have stepped in. This is no longer just a messy divorce or a corporate embezzlement case. It’s an active federal wire fraud and money laundering investigation."

"Where is Daniel now?" I asked.

"He made bail yesterday," Eleanor replied, her mouth tightening in disgust. "His mother put up her house in the suburbs to secure his bond. He’s staying at a cheap motel near the highway because his assets remain completely frozen, and he’s legally barred from entering the marital home or approaching within five hundred feet of you and Maya."

"And Olivia?"

Marcus let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Olivia spent forty-eight hours in custody before her high-priced defense attorney cut a deal. She handed over every single text message, email, and encrypted voice note between her and Daniel. She’s claiming Daniel was the mastermind who manipulated her into the scheme."

I shook my head slowly, taking a sip of the warm tea. "Daniel thought he was the smartest man in every room he walked into. He thought people were tools to be used and discarded when they became inconvenient."

"Well, the tool just turned on him," Eleanor said, sliding a fresh document toward me. "The United States Attorney’s office wants you to review these records, Emma. Because your name was forged on several loan documents, you are classified as a primary victim, not a co-conspirator. But we have to make sure every single signature that isn't yours is formally challenged before the grand jury convenes next week."

I looked down at the document. There it was: my name, scribbled in Daniel’s hurried, familiar handwriting, signing away our family’s security so he could impress a woman who abandoned him the second the sirens started wailing.

"I’ll testify," I said without hesitation.

"It won't be easy," Marcus cautioned gently, his gaze searching my face with deep concern. "Daniel is cornered. Men like him, when they lose their money, their status, and their pride, become desperate. He will try to drag your name through the mud before this is over."

"Let him try," I said, looking toward the hallway that led to the nursery where my daughter slept. "Daniel has spent months underestimating what I am willing to endure to protect my child. If he wants a war in the open, I will make sure he faces the full consequences of every single choice he made."

Just then, my phone buzzed on the table. It was an alert from a local news outlet.

Marcus grabbed his phone, his brow furrowing as he read the headline. "Damn it."

"What is it?" I asked.

Marcus turned the screen toward me.

*BREAKTHROUGH IN ARCHITECTURAL SCANDAL: DANIEL REED’S LEGAL TEAM RELEASES LEAKED EMAILS CLAIMING ESTRANGED WIFE SUFFERED SEVERE MENTAL INSTABILITY PRIOR TO CORPORATE COLLAPSE.*

Below the headline was a blurry photo of me leaving the hospital three weeks ago, looking exhausted and pale, alongside fabricated quotes from an 'anonymous family source' claiming I had destroyed the firm’s files in a fit of post-pregnancy rage.

Daniel was playing his final, dirtiest card. He was trying to win in the court of public opinion what he had already lost in the court of law.
