Chapter 7 - The Desperate Strike

Desperation makes weak men reckless.
At 7:00 PM that evening, I was inside my office on the top floor of Bennett Ag headquarters. The building was largely empty; the cleaning crew moved silently through the hallways, their vacuums humming in the background.
The door to my office flew open.
Adrian stood in the doorway. He had been drinking. The smell of bourbon was thick in the air, his eyes wild, his jacket missing, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
Behind him stood Vanessa Cole, clutching Noah against her chest, her face streaked with mascara, panic written across every feature.
"Caroline," Adrian slurred, stepping into the room. He slammed the door shut behind him. "You think you’re so clever, don't you? You think you can just run to Merier and steal everything my grandfather built?"
I sat behind my desk, not moving. My right hand rested quietly near the silent security button beneath the desktop.
"You shouldn't be in this building, Adrian," I said calmly. "Security had orders to revoke your clearance."
"I know the night guard! He’s known me since I was twelve!" Adrian yelled, slamming his hand onto the edge of my desk. "This is *my* company! Bennett! Look at the sign on the front gate! It doesn't say Vance! It doesn't say Merier! It says Bennett!"
Vanessa stepped forward, her voice high and frantic. "Caroline, tell him! Tell him you fabricated those documents! Tell him Liam is just an old family friend! Adrian, Noah is yours! Look at him! Look at his eyes!"
Adrian spun around, glaring at Vanessa with a mixture of hatred and pathetic desperation. "Shut up, Vanessa! Shut your damn mouth!"
"Adrian, she’s lying to you to tear us apart!" Vanessa cried, tears spilling over her cheeks. "She’s barren, she’s jealous, she wants to destroy what we have!"
"Enough!" I stood up, my voice cutting through the hysterical noise like an iron blade.
Both of them stopped.
I looked at Vanessa. "Liam Ortiz signed a full confession two hours ago, Vanessa."
Vanessa froze. Her mouth fell open.
"What?" she breathed.
"Julian Vance presented him with the offshore wire logs," I said. "Liam realized that being an accomplice to corporate embezzlement would land him in federal prison for fifteen years. He handed over your text messages. All of them. Including the one from last September where you told him Adrian was completely blinded by his ego and would pay for the child’s trust fund without ever asking for a DNA test."
Vanessa’s knees gave out. She sank onto the leather couch in the corner of my office, clutching the baby, sobbing uncontrollably.
Adrian stared at her, the final shred of his delusion tearing away. The drunken rage in his eyes turned into pure, hollow shock.
"You..." Adrian whispered, pointing a shaking finger at her. "You used me."
"You used each other," I said. "She wanted your money, and you wanted a prop to prove you were a real man. Neither of you cared who you crushed along the way."
Adrian turned back toward me, his shoulders shaking. "Caroline... Caroline, please. We were married for seven years. We built this. You can't just throw me away. I made a mistake. A terrible, stupid mistake. But we can fix this. We can fire Vanessa, we can settle with Liam, we can tell the French that we are united..."
He stepped toward me, reaching out his hands as if to beg.
"Don't touch me, Adrian," I said, taking a step back.
"Caroline, please!" He dropped to one knee beside my desk, completely breaking down, weeping like a broken child. "I have nothing left! Mother won't take my calls! The board is going to strip me! Don't leave me with nothing!"
I looked down at the man I had loved for seven years. I had cooked for him, stayed up nights solving his financial blunders, protected his dignity, endured his mother's cruelty, all while he plotted to discard me like an old tool.
I felt no hatred. Only a profound, liberating emptiness.
"You don't have nothing, Adrian," I said quietly. "You have the one thing you always valued most."
He looked up, tears staining his face. "What?"
May you like
"You have your pride," I said. "Now take Vanessa and get out of my office before I have the police escort you out in handcuffs."
