Chapter 6 - The Broken Alliance

The silence in the parlor was suffocating.

Evelyn looked down at the carpet, her proud shoulders slumping, aging ten years in ten seconds. The great Bennett dynasty, the pure bloodline she had worshipped like an idol, was nothing more than an expensive fraud orchestrated by a socialite and a logistics executive.

"Adrian..." Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking. "Is this true? Did you know about the clinic?"

Adrian sank into a chair, burying his face in his hands. He didn't answer. His silence was the loudest confession in the world.

"You knew," Evelyn said, tears of humiliation finally leaking from her eyes. "You knew you couldn't father a child, and you let me parade that boy in front of the entire Sacramento society... you made a fool of me!"

"Mother, please—" Adrian choked out.

"Don't speak to me!" she hissed, turning her face away from him in absolute disgust.

I checked my watch.

"My eight minutes are up," I said, closing my briefcase with a sharp, definitive click.

"Caroline," Evelyn called out, her voice trembling, stripped of all its former venom. "Caroline, wait... please. If this gets out... if the press finds out... the Bennett name will be ruined. The agricultural board will pull their contracts. The family..."

I looked at the woman who had spent seven years treating me like an expendable piece of corporate machinery.

"You should have thought about the Bennett name before you celebrated my replacement on a public terrace, Evelyn," I said. "The board meets tomorrow morning at eight. I expect your full proxy vote transferred to my desk by midnight. If it isn't, these documents go to every agricultural trade journal in North America."

I walked out of the house, leaving mother and son sitting among the ruins of their manufactured empire.

When I reached my car, my phone rang. It was Jean-Luc Merier.

"Bonjour, Caroline," the deep, aristocratic voice came through the speaker. "Our plane has just cleared customs. Adrian’s office told my assistant he was unavailable due to an emergency, but you are listed as the primary signatory. Are we still on schedule for tomorrow's summit?"

I took a deep breath, looking through the windshield at the rolling California hills under the bright afternoon sun.

"We are ahead of schedule, Monsieur Merier," I replied in fluent, unaccented French. "Adrian has stepped down due to structural restructuring. I will be handling the negotiations personally."

There was a slight pause on the line, followed by a low, appreciative chuckle from the French industrialist.

"Ah. Your French is immaculate, Madame Bennett. Adrian never mentioned that his wife was bilingual."

"Adrian overlooked a great many things, Jean-Luc," I replied. "I look forward to seeing you at eight."
