Chapter 5 - The Bloodline Deception

By Wednesday morning, the Bennett family estate in Loomis was under siege.
Evelyn Bennett summoned me to the ancestral house at 10:00 AM. When I walked into the grand parlor, Adrian was already there, pacing the hardwood floor like a caged panther. His tie was undone, his hair disheveled, empty cups of espresso littering the antique side table.
Evelyn sat in a high-backed Queen Anne armchair, dressed in a black tweed suit, her pearl necklace gleaming against her wrinkled throat.
"Caroline," Evelyn said, not offering me a seat. Her voice was like dry leaves scraping over concrete. "Sit down. We have an intolerable situation to resolve."
I remained standing. "I have eight minutes, Evelyn. The Merier advance legal team lands at Sacramento Executive Airport in forty-five minutes, and I have to sign the airport tarmac clearance protocols."
"You will sign nothing until this nonsense is rescinded!" Adrian exploded, stepping toward me, his eyes bloodshot. "You locked me out of the primary servers! Do you have any idea what you’ve done? Merier’s people are arriving, and I can't even open the proprietary yield dossiers!"
"You shouldn't have spent yield dossier funds on diamond drop earrings, Adrian," I replied coldly.
"Caroline!" Evelyn slammed her silver walking stick onto the Persian rug. The sound cracked through the parlor. "That is enough! You will respect my son, and you will respect this family! For seven years, we welcomed you into this home. We overlooked your... biological deficiencies. We overlooked the fact that you could not give Adrian an heir. We allowed you to manage the ledgers because Adrian was too generous to hurt your feelings. But this? This petty, vindictive tantrum because another woman gave this family what you were incapable of providing? It ends today!"
I looked at Evelyn. There wasn't an ounce of warmth in her eyes. Only generational cruelty, an obsession with bloodlines and social standing that had rotted the Bennett family from the inside out.
"Biological deficiencies, Evelyn?" I asked, my voice dangerously quiet.
"Yes!" Evelyn spat. "A woman who cannot bear children has no right to hold the family name hostage! Vanessa has brought Noah into this world. A true Bennett. The boy who will carry our name long after you are forgotten. You will sign the proxy back to Adrian, you will accept a five-million-dollar divorce settlement, and you will leave California. If you do not, I will personally spend every dollar in the Bennett family trust to drag your reputation through every newspaper in this state."
I looked from Evelyn to Adrian.
Adrian looked away, unable to meet my eyes, cowardice dripping from his posture.
"You really believe Noah is a Bennett, don't you, Evelyn?" I asked.
"He has my late husband's chin!" Evelyn declared proudly. "He has the Bennett eyes! Adrian is his father, and the blood speaks for itself!"
I opened my briefcase and took out two documents.
The first was the medical dossier from Dr. Chen.
"Read it," I said, dropping it onto Evelyn’s lap.
Evelyn frowned, putting on her reading glasses. Adrian’s head snapped toward the document. When he saw the header—*Chen Fertility Institute – Comprehensive Male Pathology*—his face turned an unnatural shade of chalk white.
"What... what is that?" Adrian stammered, stepping forward.
"Read it to your mother, Adrian," I said. "Read her the part where Dr. Chen discovered that your natural fertility index is absolute zero. Read her the diagnosis of non-obstructive azoospermia. Tell her how you begged Arthur Chen to hide the results from the board three years ago so nobody would know that the golden heir of Bennett Systems was completely sterile."
Evelyn’s eyes widened as she scanned the medical terms. Her hands began to shake. "Adrian... what... what is this? This says... it says natural conception is impossible."
"It’s an old report!" Adrian yelled, his voice cracking into panic. "Medical science isn't absolute! Miracles happen! Noah is mine! Vanessa swore to me on her mother's grave that there was no one else! She was in Bordeaux with me!"
"She was in Bordeaux with you for three days, Adrian," I said, pulling out the second document.
This one was a series of private flight manifests and hotel folios obtained from Marcus Vance’s personal files twelve hours ago.
"The other eleven days of her ovulation window," I continued, "she wasn't in Bordeaux. She was in Saint-Tropez. Staying at the Villa des Palmes."
Adrian’s breath hitched. "Villa des Palmes? That’s... that’s Liam’s family villa."
"Yes," I said softly. "Liam Ortiz. Your VP of Logistics. The man you promoted last summer. The man whose father owns twenty-five percent of the cold-storage supply chain in Southern California."
Evelyn dropped the medical report onto the rug. She looked up at her son, horror dawning in her eyes. "Liam? Liam Ortiz?"
"I had Julian’s private investigator run the security logs from the villa," I said, watching Adrian’s world collapse piece by piece. "Vanessa wasn't alone in Saint-Tropez. And when Noah was born, Liam Ortiz quietly transferred two hundred thousand dollars into Vanessa’s private trust account in Switzerland. Noah doesn't have your husband's chin, Evelyn. He has Liam Ortiz’s genetic code. Your son wasn't chosen to be a father. He was chosen to be a wallet."
Adrian stumbled backward, his hand catching the edge of a mahogany bookcase to keep from falling.
"No..." he whispered, shaking his head violently. "No, no, no... Vanessa loves me. She gave me my son... she gave me Noah..."

"She gave you an invoice, Adrian," I said. "And you paid it with my company’s money."
