Chapter 9 - Chloe’s Betrayal

Chloe Davenport had never felt so small in her life.
When she stepped off the commercial flight at JFK, there was no black limousine waiting for her at the curb. Her luggage had been reduced to two carry-ons, the rest seized by the Aspen resort to cover her unpaid tabs. When she arrived at the high-rise offices of Blackwood-Marin, escorted not by security but by two junior corporate paralegals, she looked like a shadow of the glamorous influencer who had mocked Elena on social media twenty-four hours earlier.
She was ushered into Elena’s corner office.
Elena was seated behind a vast desk of polished dark walnut. She wore a sharp, tailored ivory power suit, looking every inch the sovereign queen of Manhattan finance.
Chloe stood awkwardly in the center of the Persian rug, clutching her imitation designer handbag. "I... I didn't know," Chloe stammered, tears immediately welling in her eyes. "Julian told me you two were separated for over a year! He told me you were just holding onto the marriage for the trust money!"
Elena did not invite her to sit. She merely gestured to a leather chair across the room.
"Sit down, Miss Davenport," Elena said smoothly. "Let us dispense with the rehearsed victimhood. You knew exactly who Julian was. You knew he had a six-year-old daughter. And you certainly didn't care about the state of our marriage when you were charging eight-thousand-dollar ski chalets to my family foundation."
Chloe sank into the chair, trembling. "What are you going to do to me? My agency dropped me. My accounts are frozen. I have nothing left!"
Elena opened a folder on her desk and slid a single sheet of paper forward.
"This is an affidavit prepared by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York," Elena explained. "It details Julian’s offshore accounts and confirms that you were knowingly receiving corporate funds diverted from Blackwood-Marin Holdings."
Chloe gasped, turning pale. "Prison? I can't go to prison!"
"You won't," Elena said calmly. "Provided you do exactly what I tell you to do."
Elena leaned forward, her gaze piercing right through the younger woman’s fragile composure.
"Julian has a secret meeting scheduled tonight at the Metropolitan Club. He believes he’s meeting an old private equity friend to secure an emergency bridge loan. You are going to call him. You will tell him you arrived from Aspen with the backup hard drive he left in the St. Regis safe—the one containing his Apex Ridge encryption keys."
"He... he has that hard drive?" Chloe whispered, terrified.
"No," Elena smiled coldly. "I have it. You are going to convince him to meet you in the lobby of the Plaza Hotel before his dinner. And you will wear this."
Elena reached into her desk drawer and pulled out a delicate, diamond-encrusted brooch. Concealed inside the platinum setting was a high-frequency digital audio transmitter connected directly to the Southern District’s surveillance van.
"Why should I help you?" Chloe sobbed. "He loved me!"
"He used you as a decorative accessory to stroke his wounded ego," Elena retorted without a shred of pity. "And the moment the handcuffs click around his wrists, he will claim you were the mastermind who blackmailed him into stealing the money. Sign the cooperation agreement, Miss Davenport, or let the federal marshals take you into custody right now."

Chloe looked from the paper to the brooch, then up at the formidable woman sitting across from her. Her trembling hand reached for the pen.
