Chapter 4 - The Aspen Receipts

By noon, the financial district was already buzzing, but the true storm was brewing on the digital frontier. While Elena spent the afternoon systematically reorganizing the senior executive team, Chloe Davenport was waking up in the presidential suite of the St. Regis Aspen, completely oblivious to the massacre that had taken place in New York.
Chloe stretched across the 800-thread-count sheets, reaching for her gold-encased iPhone to check the engagement on her latest post. The photo featured her in a designer white cashmere ski suit, holding a flute of vintage champagne against the backdrop of the snow-capped Rockies, captioned: *“Some men give you promises. Mine gives you private jets and mountains. 🤍 #AspenChristmas #Blessed #SprawlingLove.”*
She expected thousands of adoring comments from her half-million followers, praising her lifestyle and asking about the mysterious, high-powered billionaire whose hand was subtly visible on her waist in the frame.
Instead, the comment section was an inferno.
*“Is this the same private jet paid for with embezzled funds from his wife’s family trust?”* read the top comment, with over twelve thousand likes.
*“Check the news, honey. You’re tagging a man who just got dragged out of his own building by building security.”*
*“Look at the leaked receipts on Twitter. She bought that Chanel suit with a corporate card that bounced three hours ago!”*
Chloe sat bolt upright in bed, her heart hammering against her ribs. She switched apps to Twitter, only to find her name trending third in the United States, right beneath #BlackwoodOuster and #ElenaMarinReturns.
A verified financial blog had published a comprehensive document leak under the headline: *THE COST OF AN AFFAIR: HOW AN OUSTED CEO SPENT $1.2 MILLION IN STOLEN MARIN DIVIDENDS ON AN ASPEN MISTRESS.*
The article contained itemized credit card statements, flight manifests, and hotel folios. Every bottle of Château Margaux, every private helicopter charter, and every piece of jewelry Julian had showered upon her over the past six months was laid bare, complete with the billing address of the Marin Family Foundation’s charitable trust. Elena had not merely uncovered the affair; she had documented every cent of corporate fraud Julian had committed to fund it.
A loud knock startled Chloe out of her spiraling panic.
She threw on a velvet robe and rushed to the suite door, expecting Julian’s assistant or a concierge bearing fresh fruit. Instead, she was met by the hotel manager, accompanied by two stone-faced security officers.
"Miss Davenport?" the manager asked, his professional warmth replaced by stiff, legal caution.
"Yes? What is the meaning of this? Julian Blackwood booked this suite until next Tuesday!"
"Mr. Blackwood’s corporate card was flagged as fraudulent two hours ago, Miss Davenport," the manager replied, holding up an itemized tablet. "Furthermore, the Marin Trust has issued a formal cease-and-desist regarding any room charges. There is currently an unpaid balance of forty-six thousand dollars on this suite for room service, spa treatments, and private chalet rentals."
"That’s ridiculous!" Chloe shrieked, backing away. "Call Julian right now! He’s the CEO of Blackwood Holdings!"
"Julian Blackwood was removed by the board at nine o’clock this morning," the manager said flatly. "You have sixty minutes to settle the outstanding balance using your personal funds and vacate the premises, or we will be forced to contact the Pitkin County Sheriff's Department."

Chloe’s hands shook so violently she dropped her phone onto the plush carpet. As the screen lit up, an incoming call from Julian flashed on the glass.
