Chapter 10 - The Gala of Reckoning

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel glittered under the weight of crystal chandeliers, cascading white orchids, and the clinking of champagne flutes. It was the night of the annual Vanguard Children’s Foundation Winter Gala, the most exclusive and scrutinized charity event on the New York social calendar.

Ordinarily, Julian Blackwood would have strutted through these gilded double doors like an emperor, basking in the flattering smiles of hedge fund managers and senators.

Tonight, he was forced to enter through the service entrance.

Julian had spent his last two hundred dollars bribing a banquet prep worker for a spare tuxedo and a silver service badge. His eyes were wild, his hair hastily slicked back with cheap pomade. In his pocket was the key to a locker at Port Authority where he had hidden a forged passport he managed to buy off a contact in Chinatown.

All he needed was the Apex Ridge hard drive from Chloe. With those keys, he could bypass the corporate firewalls, wire the remaining forty million to an untraceable bank in Dubai, and disappear forever onto a private yacht in the Mediterranean.

He slipped through the velvet curtains into the secondary foyer, scanning the sea of diamond-draped socialites and tuxedo-clad elites.

Suddenly, the music quieted, and the master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium on the central stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the announcer’s voice boomed across the marble ballroom. "Please join me in welcoming tonight’s keynote speaker, our newly appointed Chairwoman of the Vanguard Foundation and the majority shareholder of the Marin Global Enterprise... Mrs. Elena Marin!"

The room erupted into thunderous, genuine applause.

Julian froze in his tracks behind a marble pillar, his jaw slacking in utter disbelief.

Elena stepped up to the podium. She was breathtaking. Draped in an emerald-green velvet evening gown that accentuated her graceful posture, wearing her grandmother’s heirloom diamond choker, she looked every inch the undisputed queen of Manhattan society. There was no trace of the quiet, subdued wife Julian had belittled for nearly ten years. She radiated pure, unshakeable authority.

"Thank you, everyone," Elena began, her voice echoing melodiously through the ballroom speakers. "True leadership is not defined by the titles we inherit or the money we display. It is defined by the integrity we uphold when no one is watching... and the courage to remove corruption, even when it hides beneath our own roof."

A discreet murmur of admiration rippled through the high-society crowd. Every person in the room knew about Julian’s ouster, and every eye was transfixed by Elena’s triumph.

From the edge of the terrace entrance, Julian spotted Chloe.

She stood near the ice sculpture, wearing a silver silk dress and clutching an ornate velvet evening clutch.

Julian saw his chance. Slipping away from the staff perimeter, he darted through the shadows of the banquet hall, intercepting Chloe behind the grand floral display near the terrace doors.

"Chloe!" Julian hissed, grabbing her wrist roughly and pulling her into the alcove. "Do you have it? Tell me you brought the drive!"
