Chapter 9 - The Alpine Dawn

The morning sun rose over Lake Zurich, painting the snowy mountain peaks in breathtaking shades of rose and gold. The storm had passed, leaving behind a world that felt clean, bright, and newborn.
Julian, Steven, and I sat on the enclosed terrace of the villa in Cologny, sipping warm herbal tea as the international news networks exploded across the screens.
Every major financial headline across the globe was covering the scandal:
*‘Richard Vance Arrested in Zurich in Multi-Million Dollar Money Laundering Bust.’*
*‘Chloe Laurent Detained at Boston Airport; Vance Horizon Board Seizes Control.’*
*‘Valerie Vance Named Sole Chairwoman and Chief Executive of Vance Horizon Global.’*
Julian watched the screen with a faint, satisfied smile. He raised his teacup toward me. "Arthur would have given him a second chance. And that is why Arthur died with an ulcer, while you, Valerie, will live to see this empire double in value."
"I didn't do it for the money, Julian," I said, leaning back and watching the light dance on the water. "I did it so my daughter would never have to apologize for existing in her own home."
Julian nodded slowly. He reached into his coat and produced a thick, wax-sealed envelope, sliding it across the glass table to me.
"What is this?" I asked.
"Arthur knew he was dying," Julian said quietly, his voice losing its cynical edge. "He reached out to me six months before he passed. He knew Richard was embezzling, but he was too weak to fight him in court without causing a public panic that would destroy your foundation."
I took the envelope, breaking the wax seal with trembling fingers. Inside was my father’s handwriting, neat, steady, and filled with love.
*‘My dearest Valerie,*
*If you are reading this, Julian has helped you reclaim what was stolen. Forgive me for hiding my brother from you. I was a proud man who made terrible mistakes in his youth, and I wanted to protect your innocence. But you were always stronger than me, my sweet girl. Take Julian’s counsel. He has the teeth you will need in this world. And remember: a Vance never bends. With all my love, Arthur.’*
Tears blurred my vision, warm and healing. For the first time since my father died, the crushing weight in my chest lifted. I pressed the letter against my heart.
"What will you do now, Julian?" Steven asked.
Julian stood up, buttoning his coat. "I have lived as a ghost for thirty years, Harrington. I am comfortable in the shadows. But my financial network is now at Valerie’s disposal. Any enemy who comes for Vance Horizon will have to deal with me first."

He walked over, placed a hand gently on my shoulder, and kissed the top of my head. "Go home to Boston, Valerie. Build the world your father dreamed of."
