Chapter 4 - The Sins of the Fathers

Julian gestured to a pair of velvet armchairs by the fire. Steven remained standing near the doorway, watchful, his hand instinctively resting inside his tailored jacket where his sidearm was concealed.
"Sit, Valerie," Julian repeated, softer this time. "I do not bite, especially not my own blood."
I took a seat, leaning back against the cushions to ease the dull ache in my lower back. "If you were Arthur's twin, why did he let the world believe he was alone? Why let Richard believe he had an ally in Geneva?"
"Because Arthur was a builder, but he was weak," Julian said, staring into the flames. "When we started the original venture in New York, we took money from dangerous men. When those men came to collect, Arthur wanted to confess, to go to the authorities, to ruin the Vance name. I refused. I took the fall, transferred the debts here, and allowed Arthur to play the saint."
He walked over to a heavy oak desk, unlocked a hidden drawer with a biometric sensor, and retrieved a brass key attached to a heavy steel drive.
"Richard Vance discovered my existence five years ago," Julian explained, setting the drive on the low table between us. "He believed that because Arthur had cast me out, I would be hungry for revenge. He began siphoning funds into an escrow account under my bank's purview, promising me twenty percent of the foundation's liquid reserves once he forced you out and liquidated the empire."
My hands curled into fists against the armrests. "Richard thought you were his partner."
"Richard is an amateur blinded by ego and cheap mistresses," Julian said with cold disdain. "He thought he could use me to destroy Arthur’s legacy. But Arthur was my brother. We fought like wolves, but blood does not dissolve in salt water. I took Richard’s money, I documented every wire transfer, every offshore shell company, and every bribe he paid to Boston regulators."
Steven stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the drive. "This is the complete financial architecture of Richard's criminal enterprise."
"It is his execution order," Julian corrected smoothly. "Not just for the corporate fraud in Massachusetts, but for federal money laundering, tax evasion in three jurisdictions, and illegal arms-trading investments through Cypriot fronts."
Julian looked at me, his gaze sweeping over my face, settling on the undeniable strength in my posture. "Richard fled the country four hours ago on a chartered flight to Zurich. He thinks he is meeting my representatives at the Dolder Grand Hotel tonight to collect his laundered millions. He doesn't know the Swiss Federal Police are already waiting for my signal."
A surge of fierce, cold adrenaline rushed through my veins. "He doesn't get to be arrested in a quiet hotel lobby, Julian. He humiliated me in front of three hundred people. He tried to kill my father's memory and starve my child. I want to see the look on his face when he realizes who owns him."

Julian’s lips curved into a dangerous smile. "Then you truly are a Vance. Let us go to Zurich."
