Chapter 8 - The Toast Returned

"Stay back, Valerie!" Richard shrieked, his voice cracking like a terrified child’s. "I swear to God, I'll pull the trigger! You ruined me! You took my board, you took my money, you took my mistress!"

"You took yourself down, Richard," I replied coldly, never breaking eye contact. "You thought my father's kindness was weakness. You thought my silence was stupidity. You thought you could parade your little girl on that runway, humiliate me before my peers, and walk away with my inheritance."

"I earned that company!" Richard roared, tears of rage spilling down his cheeks. "I worked under Arthur for twelve years! He treated me like a glorified secretary! He gave you everything, and you never even wanted it!"

"He gave me everything because he knew what you were," I said. "A hollow man who can only feel powerful when he stands on top of women."

Steven made a subtle movement to flank him, but Richard swung the gun toward Steven. "Don't move! You're nothing but a paid dog, Harrington!"

Before Richard could steady his aim, Julian snapped his fingers.

From the terrace doors behind Richard, three heavily armed Swiss tactical officers shattered the glass, laser sights instantly painting Richard’s chest in crimson dots.

"Polizei! Waffen fallen lassen!" a booming voice commanded.

Richard didn't drop the gun immediately. He looked at the lasers, then looked back at me, his eyes wide with a maniacal, trapped fury. He realized there was no escape, no helicopter, no billions waiting in the Cayman Islands.

"Drop it, Richard," I commanded, my voice echoing with an authority that matched my father’s at his prime. "Or die on this carpet like the dog you are."

Richard’s fingers lost their strength. The silver revolver slipped from his sweat-slicked palm and clattered harmlessly against the polished floorboards.

In a fraction of a second, two officers tackled him to the floor, driving his face hard into the shards of the broken vase, twisting his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.

Richard groaned in pain, blood dripping from a cut on his cheek. They hauled him to his feet, disheveled, ruined, broken.

I walked over to the dining table, where a bottle of vintage Dom Pérignon was sitting in an ice bucket. I poured three inches of golden champagne into a crystal flute.

I walked back to Richard, stopping three paces away.

I raised the glass, looking him straight in his bloodshot, humiliated eyes.

"To the Vance empire, Richard," I said, repeating the exact words he had used against me twenty-four hours ago in the Boston ballroom. "And to the woman who actually owns it."

I took a single sip, and then poured the rest of the champagne directly over his head, letting it drench his hair, his bruised face, and his ruined thousand-dollar suit.

"Get him out of my sight," I told the officers.

They dragged him out, screaming curses and threats that dissolved into pathetic sobs as the heavy suite doors slammed shut.
