Chapter 5 - Whispers of the Past

Up on the seventh floor, inside the soundproof sanctuary of the VIP maternity suite, the terrifying world outside felt like a distant nightmare.

The room was bathed in soft, golden morning light. The violent gale that had battered the city for twenty-four hours had finally subsided into a peaceful, white dusting of fresh snow. A crackling fire played on the digital hearth on the wall, and the rich aroma of lavender tea filled the air.

Rachel sat by the edge of the bed, softly wiping a warm cloth over my forehead. "You're safe now, Cathy. Drink some more tea. The doctor said your iron levels are stabilizing."

In my arms, Lily slept soundly, wrapped in a plush, pure-cashmere blanket embroidered with tiny golden stars. Her tiny chest rose and fell in rhythmic perfection. Every time she twitched or made a faint, milky squeak, a surge of fierce, primal protectiveness washed over my soul.

I was no longer just Catherine, the timid orphan who tiptoed around the Henderson mansion, apologizing for existing. I was a mother. And for Lily, I would burn down the world.

A soft knock sounded at the door. Rachel tensed, her hand dropping instinctively toward the emergency call button, but the door clicked open to reveal Daniel.

He stepped inside, peeling off his tailored overcoat and hanging it neatly on the wooden coat rack. The ruthless, terrifying predator who had just orchestrated the downfall of an entire empire in the lobby vanished the moment his eyes landed on me. His expression softened into something tender, almost reverent.

"Is it done?" I asked, my voice still raspy from hours of screaming during labor.

Daniel walked over to the side of the bed, pulling up a leather armchair and sitting down. He looked at Lily, a soft, genuine smile gracing his chiseled face. "They are gone, Catherine. The police have issued protective orders against both Michael and his mother. They cannot come within one thousand feet of you, Lily, or anywhere you reside."

A heavy breath escaped my lips—a breath I felt like I had been holding for two agonizing years. Tears welled up in my eyes, spilling over my lashes and tracing down my cheeks.

"He really was with Victoria, wasn't he?" I whispered, looking down at my daughter’s porcelain skin. "While I was screaming in the dark, begging the emergency operator for help... he was with her."

"Yes," Daniel said, his honesty unwavering. He reached across the bed and gently placed his warm, calloused palm over my trembling fingers. "He was celebrating a dummy real estate merger. But he will never touch champagne again, Catherine. And he will never touch another dime of your family’s money."

I blinked through my tears, looking up at him in confusion. "My family's money? Daniel... my father died bankrupt. That was why Eleanor hated me so much. She reminded me every day that the Henderson family was performing charity by keeping me fed."

Daniel’s jaw tightened, a flash of pure anger darting through his dark eyes before he masked it with gentle calm.

"Your father was Arthur Sterling, one of the most brilliant and honorable timber magnates this state ever saw," Daniel explained quietly. "Ten years ago, when my own family faced an aggressive corporate takeover, your father was the only man who extended a line of credit to my father without demanding equity in return. He saved the Brooks foundation, Catherine."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "My father did that?"

"Yes," Daniel nodded, his gaze boring into mine with absolute sincerity. "When Arthur passed away, the Henderson family swooped in like vultures. They falsified balance sheets, convinced you that you were in debt, and forced you to sign over the rights to your father’s land reserves. Eleanor used your father's wealth to fund Michael's lifestyle while treating you like an unwanted servant in your own home."

The realization hit me like a physical blow. The humiliation, the insults Eleanor hurled at me over dinners, the endless criticisms about my background, the way Michael treated me like a worthless dependent... it had all been a monstrous, calculated lie. They had stolen my life, made me feel subhuman, and then left me to die in a blizzard once they thought they had extracted everything.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner, Daniel?" I choked out, a wave of grief and anger burning through my veins.

"Because the legal web Eleanor spun was intricate, and your father’s trustees were silenced with NDAs," Daniel confessed, his thumb gently brushing across the back of my hand. "It took my team six months to untangle the fraud and secure the original wills from Switzerland. I was planning to present the evidence to you this week... but then the storm hit. And when I heard Michael had abandoned you alone at the estate, I realized there was no time left for patience."

Daniel leaned closer, his deep voice carrying a vow carved in stone. "You are not a pauper, Catherine. You are the sole heir to the Sterling Estate. And as long as I draw breath, no one will ever make you feel small again."
