Chapter 12 - The Looming Threat

Daniel didn't answer immediately. His eyes remained locked on mine, an unspoken promise lingering in the charged air between us.

*Ring. Ring. Ring.*

The tone was different from his normal phone—it was a rapid, urgent triple-chime, the designated alert for a Level-One breach from his global intelligence division.

With a reluctant sigh, Daniel stepped back, pulling the sleek black device from his pocket. "Excuse me for a moment."

He pressed the receiver to his ear. "Speak."

I watched his face as he listened. Within three seconds, the tender, vulnerable man who had just opened his heart vanished. His jaw set into stone, his brow furrowing into a dark, terrifying scowl. His posture straightened, every muscle in his broad shoulders locking into combat readiness.

"When?" Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper. "...Are you certain? Who authorized the release?"

A heavy silence followed as the voice on the other end delivered more information.

"Lock down the perimeter immediately," Daniel ordered sharply. "Deploy Teams Bravo and Charlie to the estate grounds. No one enters or leaves without my biometric scan. Now."

He clicked the phone shut, gripping it so tightly the casing creaked beneath his knuckles.

Fear, cold and sharp, pierced through the warm peace that had enveloped me just moments before. I instinctively took a step back toward Lily’s crib, shielding her with my body.

"Daniel... what is it?" I asked, my voice trembling. "Is it Michael? Did he escape?"

Daniel turned to me. His expression was carefully controlled, but behind the mask of cold authority, I saw a flicker of genuine alarm—something I had never seen in Daniel Brooks before.

"Michael is in custody, Catherine. He is not the problem," Daniel said, walking swiftly over to the French doors and pulling the heavy blackout curtains shut, blocking out the pleasant spring sunlight.

"Then who is?"

Daniel paused, looking at me with dark, troubled eyes.

"Four years ago, before your father passed away, he entered into an offshore commercial partnership with a European maritime consortium called the Valenti Syndicate," Daniel explained, his tone urgent and grim. "Arthur discovered they were using his timber shipments to launder illicit cargo. He blew the whistle and turned over their manifest records to Interpol."

My heart hammered violently against my chest. "I remember... my father was terrified of someone during his final months. He installed security cameras everywhere at the cottage. He told me it was just paranoid business caution."

"It wasn't paranoia," Daniel said, stepping closer and placing both hands on my shoulders, his grip firm and grounding. "The head of that syndicate, Julian Valenti, was sentenced to twenty-five years in a maximum-security penitentiary in Milan. Arthur’s testimony was the cornerstone of the conviction."

Daniel swallowed hard, his dark eyes darkening further.

"Julian Valenti escaped from custody during a prison transport transfer twelve hours ago," Daniel revealed. "And thirty minutes ago, my cyber-intelligence team intercepted a communication routed through a private airfield just fifty miles north of here."

The room seemed to spin around me. The phantom shadows of my father’s past, which I thought were long buried, were suddenly clawing their way back to the surface.

"Why would he come here?" I whispered, my voice breaking as I looked back at baby Lily. "My father is dead. The syndicate was dismantled years ago!"

"Julian Valenti doesn't care that Arthur is dead," Daniel said, his voice deadly serious. "To men like him, debts of blood do not expire with a grave. He knows Arthur had a daughter. And he knows Arthur’s estate has just been liquidated and reorganized under your name."

Just then, the heavy double doors of the nursery burst open.

Briggs, Daniel’s head of security, stepped inside. His face was grim, a tactical radio strapped to his chest, and in his hand was an unaddressed, wax-sealed black envelope.

"Sir," Briggs said, breathing heavily. "An unmarked drone just dropped this onto the north terrace fountain and detonated its battery pack. It’s addressed to Ms. Sterling."

Daniel stepped in front of me instantly, snatching the envelope from Briggs’s hand. He used a pocketknife to slice open the top, pulling out a single sheet of heavy parchment and a photograph.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed into slits as he looked at the photograph. He didn't show it to me, but the sheer fury that radiated from his body was suffocating.

"What does it say, Daniel?" I demanded, my voice rising in panic as I stepped around his shoulder to look. "Show me!"

Daniel slowly turned the parchment toward me.

Written in elegant, flowing black calligraphy were just eight words:

*THE DEBTS OF THE FATHER ARE PAID BY THE DAUGHTER.*

Beneath the note was the photograph.

It was a candid, high-resolution shot taken through a telescopic lens just two hours ago. It showed me standing by the open nursery window, holding Lily in my arms, laughing in the sunlight.

On Lily’s tiny forehead in the photograph was a bright, red laser dot.

A horrifying, blood-curdling chill tore through my veins. The storm of Michael Henderson was over, but an infinitely darker, deadlier tempest had just made landfall at our gates.

Daniel looked down at the photograph, then up at me, his eyes burning with an unholy, lethal fire.

"Briggs," Daniel said, his voice deathly calm, the calm before an apocalyptic storm. "Prepare the subterranean bunker. We are at war."
