Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The silence in the grand lobby was so heavy that the rapid, ragged breathing of Michael Henderson sounded like a dying bellows.
"Mom..." Michael stammered, his fingers trembling violently as he gripped Eleanor’s cashmere sleeve. "Mom, look at the screen. Look at the tickers. Henderson Holdings is dropping. It’s... it’s crashing."
Eleanor snatched her arm away from her son, her face a grotesque mask of rage and terror. She refused to crumble, even as the empire she had spent thirty years building turned to ash before her eyes.
"You bluff, Brooks!" Eleanor shrieked, though her voice lacked its earlier venomous bite. Several security guards had now formed a perimeter around them, hands resting casually on their utility belts. "You cannot buy up debt without a thirty-day notice period! My attorneys will have an injunction on your desk by lunch!"
"Call them," Daniel suggested smoothly. He pulled an antique silver pocket watch from his vest, glanced at the time, and clicked it shut. "I encourage you to try. In fact, use the lobby payphone if your cell phone service has already been terminated."
As if summoned by his words, Michael’s smartphone chimed with a frantic flurry of notifications. He pulled it out with shaking hands.
*ALERT: Wells Fargo Corporate Account Frozen.*
*ALERT: Chase Private Client Card Canceled.*
*ALERT: Incoming Call from Attorney Vance.*
Michael answered on speakerphone in a desperate frenzy. "Hello? Marcus? Tell me this is an error!"
"Michael?!" The frantic voice of their lead corporate attorney blasted through the speaker for everyone to hear. "What the hell did you do?! The Department of Justice just flagged our entire mezzanine financing! Brooks Global executed a hostile debt foreclosure twenty minutes ago! Marcus Vance Law cannot represent you anymore—our retainers just bounced! You are completely unprotected!"
"Marcus, wait! Don't hang up—"
*Beep. Beep. Beep.*
The line went dead.
Michael looked up at Daniel, terror completely hollowing his features. The handsome, arrogant bachelor who had charmed Catherine two years ago with promises of fairy-tale love had evaporated, leaving behind a pathetic, spineless coward.
"Daniel... please," Michael whimpered, taking a step toward the billionaire with his hands outstretched like a beggar. "Catherine is my wife. We took vows. It was just a misunderstanding! Victoria meant nothing to me—she was just networking for an overseas deal! If Catherine just talks to me, she’ll understand! Let me go upstairs to her. I want to see my daughter!"
Before Michael could take another step, two of Daniel’s towering security guards moved with synchronized precision, planting themselves directly in front of him like brick walls.
"Do not insult my intelligence, Michael," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register of icy finality. "You left a pregnant woman alone without power, heat, or transportation in a storm that shut down the entire tri-state area. You silenced your phone because you didn't want the sounds of her labor interrupting your champagne breakfast. You are not a husband. You are not a father. You are a parasite."
Eleanor lunged forward, her manicured claws aiming straight for Daniel’s face. "She was nobody until we took her in! A penniless graphic designer! We gave her a roof! We gave her status!"
"You gave her isolation and emotional abuse," Daniel countered without flinching as a guard casually intercepted Eleanor's arm, twisting it back just enough to force her onto her knees. "And while we're uncovering secrets, Eleanor... perhaps we should discuss Catherine’s father’s trust."
Eleanor’s body went completely rigid. The color vanished from her cheeks, leaving behind an ashen, sickly grey.
"What... what are you talking about?" she whispered, her voice finally breaking.
"Did you really think Arthur Sterling died without auditing his family estate?" Daniel asked, tilting his head slightly. "You told Catherine her father left her with millions in business debts. You coerced her into signing over her inheritance rights to your family foundation as a condition of marriage. But Arthur’s original will was never destroyed. It was deposited with a private fiduciary in Zurich. And I acquired that firm six months ago."
Daniel looked down at Eleanor with utter disdain.
"Catherine didn't marry into your fortune, Eleanor. You married your pathetic son to her so you could siphon seventy million dollars of Sterling timber assets to keep your sinking ship afloat. You stole her birthright."
Michael’s jaw dropped. He turned to his mother in utter bewilderment. "Mom? Is that... is that true? We were broke back then?"
"Shut up, you idiot!" Eleanor snarled, trying and failing to pull herself up from the floor.
"Officers," Daniel called out, looking past the pathetic pair toward the hospital entrance.
Two uniformed police officers, accompanied by a woman in a dark gray suit holding a leather briefcase, walked swiftly through the revolving doors.
"Eleanor Henderson, Michael Henderson," the woman announced, flashing a badge from the District Attorney’s Special Financial Crimes Unit. "You are being served with an immediate emergency restraining order on behalf of Catherine Sterling-Henderson and minor child Lily Sterling. Furthermore, a warrant has been issued for the seizure of all electronic records and correspondence relating to the Sterling Trust."
Michael fell back against the reception counter, his legs giving out beneath him. "Restraining order? No... no, I didn't hurt her!"

"You have ten seconds to exit the property before you are placed in physical custody," Daniel said, turning his back on them. "Enjoy the walk in the snow, Michael. Your leased sports car was repossessed by the tow truck outside five minutes ago."
Without waiting for their screams, their curses, or their pathetic pleas, Daniel walked smoothly toward the private elevators, the heavy chrome doors sliding open to welcome him back to the woman who would never be hurt again.
