Chapter 8 - The Public Unmasking

*Word count target: ~3,000 words*

"Now, we all love a good fairy tale," Julian continued, projecting his voice across the massive ballroom with theatrical charm. "A handsome working-class hero sweeps the corporate queen off her feet at a chance restaurant encounter. Beautiful, right?"

He paused, letting out a chuckle that didn't reach his icy eyes.

"Except, according to public records, Mr. Cole’s construction firm was facing imminent bankruptcy last week—until a mysterious anonymous wire transfer cleared his six-hundred-thousand-dollar debt on Friday morning. Right before they got married."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Necks craned toward us. Flashbulbs fired like strobe lights, capturing every drop of sweat on my brow.

Claire stepped forward, her voice ringing out ice-cold and razor-sharp. "Are you questioning the validity of my marriage, Julian, or are you simply furious that you failed to seize control of the board?"

"I'm questioning a fraud, Claire!" Julian snapped, dropping the polite facade. He signaled to the large projector screen behind him. "Because according to medical confidentiality waivers filed by the Whitman Trust, anyone assuming the CEO position must be free of major legal or personal entanglements—and yet, my private investigators found something even more interesting. Ethan Cole isn't just a random builder. His sister Hannah is a prominent financial auditor who was recently investigating Whitman Enterprises' offshore accounts."

The room erupted into gasps.

I looked at Claire, shock crashing over me. "Hannah? My sister was investigating your company?"

Claire didn't look at me. Her jaw was set like stone. "It was a precaution, Ethan. Before I approached you, I needed to know who I was dealing with."

"You investigated *me*?" I asked, the betrayal cutting deeper than Julian's entire speech. "You didn't just stumble on me at that restaurant by accident, did you?"

Claire’s eyes finally met mine, and for the first time, the armor cracked. A look of genuine vulnerability flickered across her face. "No, Ethan. I didn't. I needed a man with zero ties to corporate corruption, and my investigators brought me your file. But everything after that... everything since that dinner... was real."

Julian laughed into the microphone, triumphant. "There you have it, ladies and gentlemen! A staged marriage built on corporate espionage and lies! The marriage is a sham!"

The board members began whispering frantically among themselves. The elders were shaking their heads. Julian smiled his predatory smile, raising his glass in premature victory.
