Chapter 7 - The Gala of Shadows

The Whitman Foundation Annual Gala at the Brown Palace Hotel was the social event of the year. Crystal chandeliers cast a dazzling glow over hundreds of Denver's elite, dressed in silks, diamonds, and tailored tuxedos.
When Claire and I walked down the grand staircase arm in arm, the room fell into a collective hush. Flashbulbs blinded us from the press pen, but Claire’s grip on my arm was steady, her posture regal.
"You look tense," she whispered into my ear as we reached the ballroom floor.
"Someone sent me a video of you leaving a medical clinic," I whispered back, keeping my smile locked in place for the cameras. "With a mysterious document and a warning from your cousin."
Claire’s step faltered for a single heartbeat. Her face went pale under the heavy makeup, but she recovered instantly, nodding to a passing senator.
"We’ll talk about it later," she murmured coldly. "Right now, smile. Julian is watching us from the balcony."
True to her word, Julian stood on the mezzanine overlooking the ballroom, holding a glass of champagne, watching us like a hawk waiting to dive.
As the music swelled, we took to the dance floor for the traditional first-dance spotlight. As I pulled Claire close, my hand resting firmly on the small of her back, the distance between our worlds felt impossibly wide.
"Tell me the truth, Claire," I whispered, spinning her gracefully under the amber lights. "Are you hiding something that's going to blow this entire arrangement apart?"
"Everyone has secrets, Ethan," she replied softly, her green eyes looking straight into mine, shimmering with an emotion I couldn't quite decipher—fear, defiance, or perhaps sorrow. "Including you. But tonight, we are a united front. If Julian comes at us, we stand together."
Before I could answer, the music faded, and Julian Whitman's voice echoed through the ballroom microphone from the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming," Julian announced, his voice dripping with false warmth. "Before we continue our celebration of philanthropy, I'd like to address a rather... fascinating development in our family. Specifically, my dear cousin Claire's sudden, miraculous marriage to a local construction worker."
The room went dead silent. You could hear a pin drop on the marble floor.

Claire stiffened beside me, but I didn't let go of her hand.
