Chapter 10 - The Real Proposal

Three months later, the chaos of the corporate takeover had settled into a steady, thriving reality.
Whitman Enterprises was fully under Claire’s control. The environmental architecture division was expanding, and my construction firm had just secured the primary contract for the city's new green-energy transit hub—won entirely on merit, without a single cent of corporate manipulation.
My apartment on Market Street was still my home, but increasingly, my clothes, my toothbrush, and my presence had permanently migrated to the Cherry Hills Village townhouse.
We were sitting on the back patio on a crisp autumn evening, watching the sun dip below the Rocky Mountains, painting the sky in shades of gold and violet.
I was wearing one of my gray sweaters. Claire was wrapped in a cashmere blanket, sipping a glass of red wine.
"You know," I said, breaking the quiet, "technically, our contract says we have to stay married for a full year before we can file for an amicable divorce."
Claire turned her pale green eyes toward me, a slow, knowing smile spreading across her lips. "Is that so? Are you checking your calendar, Mr. Cole?"
"I’m just saying... legally speaking, we are still husband and wife."
She set her wine glass down on the patio table, shifted closer, and rested her head on my shoulder. The scent of jasmine and rain filled the air.
"And what if I want to void the divorce clause?" she whispered, her fingers tracing the platinum band on my left hand. "What if I decide I don't want a business transaction anymore?"
I turned toward her, cupping her face in my hands, looking deep into her eyes—eyes that no longer carried the heavy armor of a CEO, but the warmth of a woman who had finally found her safe harbor.
"Then I guess," I whispered, smiling against her lips, "I'm going to have to take you out on a real first date. No staged rejections, no bread baskets, and definitely no corporate spies."
Claire laughed—a bright, beautiful sound that echoed into the evening breeze—and pulled me in for a kiss that needed no contract, no conditions, and no escape.
We were just two strangers who had taken a leap into the dark, only to find each other in the light.

And for the first time in my life, I knew I was exactly where I was supposed to be.
