Chapter 6 - The Smoking Gun

By six in the evening, the sun was sinking beneath the tree line of Southampton, casting long, bloody-red shadows across the private airfield where Marcus and I met inside his blacked-out mobile command SUV.
On three widescreen monitors, real-time satellite imagery tracked Julian's silver Porsche Taycan.
"Where is he going?" I asked, watching the little blue dot pulse along Route 27.
"He just left his lawyer's office in East Hampton," Marcus replied, his fingers dancing across a backlit mechanical keyboard. "He’s desperate, Elena. He knows Victoria was picked up by the AG's office. He tried to access his offshore Swiss accounts two hours ago, but we had already notified the compliance directors with an emergency freeze request citing ongoing grand jury proceedings."
"How much does he have left?"
"Liquid cash? Less than twenty thousand dollars," Marcus said with a cold smirk. "His cards are maxed out, his credit lines are locked, and his socialite friends have already smelled the blood in the water. Nobody is returning his calls."
"Then why is he still heading toward the Preservation Gala?"
"Because he’s a narcissist," Marcus said, turning his chair to face me. He looked at me closely, his gaze dropping to the vintage Alexander McQueen gown I had changed into—a stunning masterpiece of black lace, silk, and a sculpted black leather corset that made me look like an avenging queen. "A man like Julian Vance would rather die in a bespoke tuxedo than admit he is broke. He thinks if he accepts that 'Philanthropist of the Year' award tonight, he can use the social prestige to convince the Old Money patriarchs in the room to back him in a bridge loan."
"He thinks the Hamptons elite will save him," I murmured.
"They will eat him alive once they see what we brought," Marcus said, handing me a slim, gold-plated USB drive. "Everything is on here. The wire transfers, the gambling debts, the audio of him planning to use Ava’s trust fund for his mistress, and the security footage from your bedroom closet."
I held the small piece of metal in my hand. It was cold, heavy with the weight of my ruined marriage, yet light enough to blow Julian’s entire world into atoms.
"Are you ready for this, Elena?" Marcus asked gently. For the first time, his voice held something personal, something tender beneath the professional armor. "Once you push this button, there is no going back. The Vance family name will be destroyed in New York society forever. People will whisper. The tabloids will feast."
I looked out the tinted window toward the Southampton dunes where the Atlantic waves crashed violently against the shore. I thought of my little girl, Ava, sitting on the floor of her room, hungry, while her father locked her out to satisfy his ego and lust.
I looked back at Marcus, my eyes shining with absolute resolve.

"My daughter’s future is not negotiable, Marcus," I said. "Let them whisper. Tonight, I tear down his house of cards."
