Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Boardroom

At two in the afternoon, the board of Aether Capital convened via an emergency hybrid meeting.

Six executive directors sat around the conference table in our Manhattan glass tower, while two European partners were patched in via encrypted teleconference. I sat at the head of the table, pristine in an ivory tailored suit, my hair pinned back into an immaculate chignon.

On the other side of the table sat Victoria Sterling.

She had dared to show up. As the firm's retained brand strategist, she held a provisional advisory seat on our media committee. She was wearing oversized sunglasses—presumably to hide the bruises of her sleepless night—and a high-collared silk blouse. Beside her sat an empty leather chair reserved for Julian, who served as a non-voting board member on our family foundation’s seat.

"Let’s begin," I said smoothly, clicking my remote. The massive wall screen behind me lit up with the quarterly venture performance reports. "Before we discuss our London expansion, there is an urgent governance matter to resolve."

Victoria cleared her throat, leaning forward. Her voice was slightly shaky, but she was trying desperately to play the victim. "Elena, before we get to business, I think the board deserves to address the... disturbing media reports circulating this morning. The rumors regarding your personal life and child custody could severely impact our public standing ahead of the Series D funding."

The room went dead silent. The board members exchanged uneasy glances.

"I appreciate your concern for the firm’s reputation, Victoria," I replied, my expression serene. "In fact, I share it. That is why this morning, our forensic compliance team audited every advisory contract executed over the past twenty-four months."

Victoria’s manicured fingers froze over her iPad.

"And what we discovered," I continued, pressing the remote again, "was fascinating."

The screen flickered. The quarterly charts vanished, replaced by an expansive organizational chart detailing three dummy corporations registered in the Cayman Islands: *Vance Horizon LLC, Sterling Sky Media, and Sea Breeze Holdings.*

"Over the past eighteen months, our firm’s marketing budget was over-billed by approximately 4.8 million dollars," I said, my voice echoing off the floor-to-ceiling glass. "Invoices were approved by Julian Vance, using his signature authority on the foundation account, and disbursed directly to Sterling Sky Media—a company wholly owned by Victoria Sterling."

Victoria shot out of her chair, her face going stark white. "This is an outrage! Those were legitimate retainer fees for brand development and international luxury placement!"

"Really?" I pulled a stapled document from my leather portfolio and slid it down the long mahogany table. It stopped directly in front of Robert Chen, our senior managing partner. "Then why did four million dollars of those 'retainers' immediately flow into an offshore account owned by a private bookmaker in Macau to cover Julian Vance’s illegal high-stakes baccarat debts?"

Robert Chen opened the folder, his eyes widening in shock. "Good God."

"That's not all," I said, looking straight at Victoria, whose chest was heaving with panic. "Victoria, you also used our corporate infrastructure to duplicate our confidential LP list—our institutional investors—and forwarded it to a boutique buyout firm in Zurich, offering to help them stage a hostile takeover of Aether Capital while I was in London."

"I... I didn't!" she shrieked, backing away from the table. "Julian told me it was an asset protection strategy! He said you were going to freeze us out! He told me—"

"He lied to you," I cut her off, my tone merciless. "Just like he lied to me. The difference is, I have the digital logs, the IP addresses, and the sworn affidavits from the Swiss banking authorities. Arthur?"

Arthur Sterling stood up from the corner of the room, accompanied by two armed private security guards and a woman in a dark federal suit.

"Victoria Sterling," Arthur announced, "your retainer agreement with Aether Capital is terminated for gross cause. Furthermore, Special Agent Miller of the New York State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Bureau is waiting in the hallway. You have the right to legal counsel, but I suggest you cooperate quickly. Because Julian Vance has already agreed to a preliminary proffer session with prosecutors to blame you for the entire scheme."

That was a calculated lie, of course. Julian hadn't cut a deal yet. But in the world of high-stakes interrogation, the prisoner’s dilemma is absolute.

Victoria gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "He did *what*?! Julian blamed *me*?! That cowardly, bankrupt bastard! I did this for him! He’s the one who took the safe keys from Elena's desk! He’s the one who told me to hide in that closet to steal her thumb drive!"

The entire boardroom stared in horror.

I looked at Special Agent Miller, who gave a slow, curt nod.

"Thank you, Victoria," I said quietly, gesturing to the door. "You’ve been very helpful. Security, please escort Miss Sterling out. And ensure her access badge is destroyed."
