Chapter 4 - The Custody Threat

The morning sun over the Atlantic brought no warmth.
At 9:00 AM, my private phone chimed with an encrypted email alert. It was from Marcus Kane. Attached was a seventy-page dossier labeled: *PROJECT ICARUS: Julian Vance & Victoria Sterling Financial Forensics.*
I opened the document while sitting on Ava’s bed, watching her peacefully sleep with her stuffed bunny clutched to her chest. As I scrolled through the bank statements, shell company filings, and intercepted text messages, my breath caught in my throat.
Julian wasn't just an unfaithful husband and an embezzler. He was drowning.
Four years ago, Julian had invested eighty million dollars of his family’s ancestral trust in an offshore crypto-derivatives scheme run by a corrupt hedge fund manager in Zurich. When the fund collapsed, the entire Vance family fortune evaporated overnight. Julian had kept it a secret from the high-society circles, from his elderly mother, and from me. He had used my credit, my business name, and Ava’s trust funds to float margin calls and settle short positions.
And Victoria wasn't merely his lover. She was his co-conspirator.
*Interception Log - July 14, 2:14 AM:*
**Victoria:** *“Are you sure Elena hasn't noticed the transfers from the London trust?”*
**Julian:** *“She’s too busy conquering the world. She trusts my signature on the family office accounts. By the time she realizes the capital is gone, the divorce will be filed in a jurisdiction that favors equitable split. She’ll have to settle for tens of millions just to keep her venture LP investors from finding out her family fund is under federal inquiry.”*
**Victoria:** *“And the girl? Ava?”*
**Julian:** *“Ava is the golden goose. If I have 50/50 custody, Elena has to pay me eighty thousand a month in child support to maintain her ‘customary standard of living.’ We’ll live like royalty on her dime, Vic.”*
My stomach heaved with violent revulsion. He saw our five-year-old child as an annuity—a monthly dividend check to finance his affair and his luxury lifestyle.
A sudden knock on the front door shattered the silence.
I walked downstairs to find Mrs. Gable standing in the entrance hall, her face pale, holding a thick manila envelope. "Ma'am, a courier just delivered this. He demanded a signature and said it was urgent."
I tore open the seal. Inside was a legal summons from the Suffolk County Family Court, along with a glossy printout from an anonymous gossip blog titled *The Hamptons Insider*.
The headline screamed:
**"VENTURE TYCOON ELENA VANCE UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR CHILD NEGLECT: ABSENT MOTHER ABANDONS FIVE-YEAR-OLD FOR WEEKS WHILE DANCING IN LONDON CLUBS."**
Attached to the article were doctored paparazzi photos from my business trip to London. One showed me at a business dinner at Annabel’s with European institutional investors, cropped to make it look like I was stumbling out of a nightclub with an unknown man. Another was a fabricated statement supposedly from an ex-nanny claiming Ava was routinely left unattended.
Julian’s shark lawyer, a notorious tabloid litigator named Harold Gold, had filed an emergency motion for ex-parte temporary custody, citing "maternal abandonment and erratic behavior." The hearing was set for Monday morning.
"He wants a war," I muttered aloud.
"Elena?" A deep, resonant voice spoke behind me.
I spun around. Standing in the foyer, having entered through the open side patio with the silent grace of a ghost, was Marcus Kane. He was tall, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit without a tie, his dark hair cropped short, and his eyes—the color of gunmetal—scanning the room with instinctive tactical precision.
"Marcus," I breathed, letting out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. "You made good time from Boston."
"I don't leave my most important client waiting," Marcus said, his voice low and calm. He walked over, his eyes fixing on the tabloid printout in my hands. He didn't ask to see it; he already knew what it was. "Gold’s firm paid twenty-five thousand dollars to that blogger at 6:00 AM this morning from a blind Venmo account linked to Victoria’s personal assistant."
"They're trying to take Ava, Marcus," I said, my voice finally cracking, the raw agony of a mother breaking through my corporate armor. "He’s trying to take my baby."
Marcus took two deliberate steps toward me. He didn't touch me—he respected my boundaries—but his presence was an unyielding wall against the storm.

"They won't take her, Elena," he said, and there was an absolute, terrifying certainty in his words. "Because by eight o'clock tonight, Julian Vance won't be fighting for custody. He will be fighting for his freedom."
