Chapter 8 - The Retribution Live

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was packed to capacity with over two hundred journalists, flashing television cameras, and live-streaming feeds broadcasting to millions across the globe.
Ryan and Savannah had declined the invitation, issuing a smug public statement through their attorney calling the press conference "a desperate publicity stunt by a failing competitor." They were watching the live feed from Ryan’s penthouse, convinced they had won the narrative battle.
At 9:00 AM sharp, the heavy oak doors opened.
I walked to the podium alone.
I wore an impeccably tailored white pantsuit, sharp, clean, and unblemished. Behind me sat Julian Thorne and the Manhattan District Attorney, Cyrus Vance.
The room erupted with shouted questions.
"Ms. Vance! Did you commit paternity fraud?"
"Who is the father of the triplets?"
"Are you Julian Thorne’s mistress?"
I raised my hand. The simple, authoritative gesture, backed by the intimidating presence of the District Attorney beside me, brought the room to a sudden, expectant hush.
"Twelve months ago," I began, my voice clear and melodic, transmitted across millions of television screens worldwide, "I sat in a conference room six months pregnant with three children. My husband looked me in the eyes, told me my babies were not his, and signed divorce papers before flying to Cabo San Lucas with his mistress."
I looked directly into the central camera lens—directly into Ryan Calloway’s eyes wherever he was watching.
"Yesterday, Savannah Brooks and Ryan Calloway went on national television to accuse me of infidelity and question the legitimacy of my children. They claimed Ryan asked for a paternity test and that I fled."
I opened a manila folder on the podium.
"Document One," I said, as the giant LED screen behind me illuminated. "This is an official, court-certified DNA paternity panel conducted by LabCorp and certified by the New York State Department of Health. The probability of Ryan Calloway’s paternity over Leo, Maya, and Noah Vance is ninety-nine point nine-nine percent."
A collective gasp swept through the room. Cameras zoomed in on the official seal.
"Ryan Calloway did not ask for a paternity test," I continued mercilessly. "He refused one. Because abandoning his pregnant wife allowed him to avoid paying child support under the forged post-nuptial agreement he illegally filed."
The room began to murmur loudly, but I didn't stop.
"Document Two," I said, tapping the remote.
The screen shifted, displaying a series of financial ledgers, wire receipts, and hotel security footage with date stamps.
"Over the past three years, Ryan Calloway embezzled four point two million dollars from federal affordable housing grants allocated for Queens and the Bronx. That money was funneled through 'Savannah Luxe LLC'—a shell corporation owned exclusively by Savannah Brooks."
Reporters frantically began typing on their laptops.
"The jewelry she wore on her social media streams? Purchased with public housing funds. The trips to Miami? Paid for by municipal tax credits meant for low-income families."
Suddenly, District Attorney Cyrus Vance stepped up to the secondary microphone.
"As of eight o'clock this morning," the DA announced in a booming voice, "the State of New York has unsealed a fourteen-count criminal indictment against Ryan Calloway and Savannah Brooks for wire fraud, grand larceny, embezzlement of federal funds, and perjury."
The ballroom descended into bedlam. Flashbulbs went off like strobes at a rock concert.
"Ms. Vance!" a New York Times reporter shouted above the noise. "What will happen to Calloway Development?"
I looked into the lens, my heart steady, my soul entirely free of the ghost that had haunted me for a year.
"Calloway Development ceased to exist thirty minutes ago," I said calmly. "The bank has called in every outstanding loan, seized the Calloway Tower assets, and transferred the receivership of the Hudson River revitalization to Thorne Global."
I paused, leaning into the microphone for one final, devastating blow.
"And Ryan... the Brooklyn apartment building you stole from me? The title was officially returned to my name ten minutes ago. My children and I thank you for maintaining the property."
I stepped away from the podium.
Julian Thorne met me at the edge of the stage. In front of every camera in New York, he did not offer a handshake. He reached out, took my face gently in his hands, and kissed my forehead with an aching, reverent tenderness that commanded more silence than any legal decree ever could.

"It is finished," Julian whispered against my skin.
