Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Pen

Within six hours of Savannah’s broadcast, the internet was a digital slaughterhouse.

Tabloids ran sensationalized headlines across every grocery checkout counter and social media feed: *SECRET LOVER OF BILLIONAIRE ACCUSED OF PATERNITY FRAUD! ARE THE CALLOWAY TRIPLETS ACTUALLY THORNE’S BASTARDS?*

Paparazzi had swarmed the perimeter of my Tribeca building. Telephoto lenses aimed at the penthouse windows, forcing the private security detail to pull down the motorized blackout blinds.

Ryan Calloway thought he had found his lifeline.

Cornered by impending financial ruin, he had embraced Savannah's strategy: turn the corporate battle into a vicious, sensationalized reality-show war. If he could paint me as an unhinged, adulterous grifter, the public backlash might pressure the city council to pause their contract with Thorne Global.

At 2:00 PM, Ryan appeared on a national afternoon talk show alongside Savannah, playing the role of the heartbroken, betrayed husband.

"I just wanted to protect my legacy," Ryan said on the broadcast, looking into the studio camera with practiced melancholy. "I loved Claire. But when the children were born, the timeline didn't add up. When I asked for a paternity test, she vanished with Thorne. Now they are trying to crush my business to silence the truth."

Inside the Thorne Global war room on the sixtieth floor, ten corporate attorneys, three public relations directors, and Julian Thorne sat watching the broadcast on the massive wall monitors.

"We have cease-and-desist orders ready for every major network," Thorne’s lead counsel, Marcus Vance (no relation), said briskly. "We can file an emergency injunction to silence Brooks's social accounts by midnight."

"Injunctions look like panic," I spoke up from the head of the table.

The room fell quiet. The attorneys looked toward Julian, expecting him to override me.

Julian was leaning against the mahogany sideboard, his arms crossed over his chest, his gaze fixed entirely on me. "Let her speak," he commanded quietly.

I stood up, walking to the digital smartboard. "Savannah Brooks’s entire career relies on brand sponsorships. Her followers are young women who believe she is an empowered, self-made lifestyle guru. Ryan’s entire credit line relies on the Bank of Manhattan, whose primary shareholder is an old-money conservative trust led by the Vanderbilt-Morrison estate."

I tapped a series of files onto the screen.

"Savannah didn't just sleep with my husband," I said, bringing up a bank statement obtained through Julian’s financial intelligence network. "She was on the payroll of Calloway Development eighteen months before the divorce. Ryan paid her through an offshore shell company registered in Belize—diverting municipal grant money earmarked for affordable housing in the Bronx into Savannah’s personal jewelry account."

Marcus the attorney leaned forward, his eyes widening. "Embezzlement of federal HUD grants?"

"Worse," I smiled coldly. "I kept the original encrypted hard drives from the Brooklyn office. Ryan forgot that when we set up the server in 2018, the two-factor authentication was tied to my personal biometric key. Every text message, every wire transfer, every private video they sent each other while using company devices was backed up to an encrypted cloud."

I turned to Julian.

"Don't file an injunction, Julian. Book the Grand Ballroom at the Plaza Hotel for tomorrow morning at nine o'clock. Invite every network, every financial reporter, and Savannah’s top twenty brand sponsors."

A slow, terrifyingly beautiful smile spread across Julian Thorne’s face.

"A press conference," he murmured.

May you like

"No," I replied, my voice dropping into a lethal, steady whisper. "An execution."
