Chapter 6 - The Web Tightens

The morning papers read like an obituary for Ryan Calloway.

*NEW YORK POST: THE REAL BRAINS BEHIND CALLOWAY? DISCARDED WIFE REVEALED AS MASTER ARCHITECT.*

*WALL STREET JOURNAL: THORNE GLOBAL SECURES HUDSON YARDS CONTRACT; CALLOWAY SHARES PLUMMET 42% AT OPENING BELL.*

Sitting on the cream-colored bouclé sofa of my new Tribeca penthouse, I sipped black coffee while Leo, Maya, and Noah crawled across the thick Persian rug. At ten months old, they were a bundle of pure, vibrant chaos.

Noah had his father's thick dark hair, but his eyes were mine—curious, relentless, and observant. Maya was already pulling herself up on the mahogany coffee table, babbling joyful nonsense, while Leo was busy systematically trying to dismantle a plush wooden train set Julian had bought for him.

"You're going to break that, little man," a low, amused voice said.

Julian walked out of the kitchen, carrying a fresh pot of coffee. He was dressed casually in a black cashmere sweater and slate trousers, looking effortlessly domestic in a way that still made my heart skip an uninvited beat.

He didn't just provide security and funding; over the past four months, Julian had quietly woven himself into the fabric of our lives. He knew which baby liked their formula warmed to exactly ninety-eight degrees (Noah), which one refused to sleep without a white noise machine (Maya), and which one would cry unless held upright after feeding (Leo).

"You're spoiling them," I said with a faint smile, setting down my mug.

"A Thorne doesn't spoil," Julian countered smoothly, sitting down on the rug cross-legged. Leo immediately abandoned the train, crawling straight into Julian's lap and tugging on his expensive watch. Julian didn't flinch; he simply repositioned the boy so he wouldn't tumble, his large hands utterly gentle. "We invest in long-term potential."

"Julian..." I hesitated, looking at him seriously. "What happened at the museum last night... the zoning board. Ryan’s investors are pulling out, but he still owns the Brooklyn residential portfolio. The loans are tied to city grants."

Julian looked up from Leo, his gaze sharpening. "He won't have them by next week. My legal team audited the shell company Ryan used to transfer your Brooklyn apartment deed. The notary stamp on the deed transfer was forged three days after you signed the refinance papers."

My breath caught. "He forged my signature?"

"He did," Julian replied, his voice hardening into steel. "He took the risk because he assumed you would never have the resources to hire forensic document examiners. That constitutes felony wire fraud and grand larceny. The Manhattan District Attorney is opening an official indictment file on Monday."

Before I could process the relief washing over me, my phone buzzed violently against the marble side table.

It was an alert from Instagram.

Savannah Brooks had just gone live.

I tapped the screen, and Julian leaned in close, his brow furrowing as the video buffered.

There was Savannah, sitting in what looked like Ryan's penthouse living room. She was dressed in an understated beige cardigan, wearing minimal makeup, with red-rimmed eyes that looked carefully staged for maximum sympathy.

*"My followers know that I always speak from the heart,"* Savannah sobbed softly into the camera, dabbing a tissue at the corner of her eye. *"Over the past twenty-four hours, my partner Ryan and I have been the victims of a coordinated, vicious smear campaign orchestrated by a ruthless corporate competitor and a deeply disturbed woman."*

The comments below the stream were moving at lightspeed, thousands of heart emojis and shocked reactions scrolling past.

*"Claire Vance abandoned her marriage because of severe psychological instability,"* Savannah continued, her voice trembling with manufactured grief. *"And now, she is weaponizing children—children whose true paternity has never been established—to extort Thorne Global and destroy an innocent man's company. Ryan offered her millions in the divorce, which she gambled away. We have proof that she was seeing multiple men during their marriage..."*

"Turn it off," Julian commanded, his voice shaking with absolute, murderous rage.

"No," I said, my voice eerily calm as I watched Savannah hold up a blurred, stolen photograph of my three infants taken outside their pediatrician's office three weeks ago.

*"We are filing for full custody of these babies,"* Savannah announced to her three million followers. *"To save them from an unfit, unstable mother who is using them as corporate bargaining chips."*

The screen went black as I locked the phone.

The penthouse was deadly quiet, save for the innocent, soft gurgles of my children playing on the rug.

Julian stood up slowly, the air around him crackling with an aura so lethal it felt suffocating. He reached for his phone, dialing his Chief of Legal Affairs. "Wipe her," Julian ordered into the receiver. "Every sponsorship. Every cosmetic contract. Every brand deal Savannah Brooks owns in North America. By noon, I want her bankrupt."

"Wait, Julian," I said, standing up to face him.

Julian paused, the phone still at his ear, looking at me with dark, furious eyes. "She dragged your babies into the public eye, Claire. She accused you of infidelity on a global platform. I will bury her."

"I know," I said, stepping closer to him, placing my hand over his wrist. The contact made him pause, his rigid muscles softening under my touch. "And you will. But not in the dark. Not with backroom corporate pressure."

My eyes flashed with an ancient, maternal fire.

"She used a camera to poison the world," I whispered. "So we will use a camera to destroy them both."
