Chapter 30 - The Shadow Behind the Throne

The thunder cracked directly above the manor like an artillery shell, rattling the stained-glass transom over the front entrance. The power grid completely failed, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.

“Get inside, Miller! Lock the perimeter!” David barked, clicking off the safety of his weapon.

Outside, the perimeter motion lights flickered briefly on emergency battery power, illuminating the dense pine woods that sloped down toward the black waters of Lake Geneva.

Through the rain-streaked window of the library, I saw a silhouette standing on the private boat dock—drenched in the storm, unmoving.

Victoria.

“She’s out by the boathouse,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, adrenaline surging through my veins like fire.

“Stay here, Claire!” David ordered, moving toward the terrace doors. “Miller, cover the rear exit. Don't let Eleanor out of your sight.”

“David, wait!” I grabbed his arm, pulling him back into the library shadows. “The audio file. Your father’s diary. Julian didn't engineer this. Someone inside our circle set Victoria up six years ago. Someone who wanted you broke and me out of the picture!”

David looked at me, confusion flashing across his features. “Who?”

Before I could answer, a soft, dry laugh echoed from the shadowed corner of the room.

Eleanor Vance stood by the fireplace, holding an unlit silver candelabra. She didn't look terrified. She didn't look frail. She looked like a queen who had finally decided to drop her disguise.

“You always were too clever for your own good, Claire,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping all pretense of motherly warmth.

David froze, his gun lowering an inch, staring at his mother in absolute horror. “Mom... what are you talking about?”

“Your father was going to leave half of Sterling-Vance to Claire’s family trust, David,” Eleanor said, her eyes flashing with cold, aristocratic fury in the dim lightning flashes. “He thought her father was the honorable partner. He was going to dilute our bloodline’s control! I couldn't allow that. I found Victoria Ross in London six years ago. I paid her tuition, I bought her wardrobe, and I orchestrated that birthday dinner dare to break your marriage before Claire could inherit a single share.”

“You... did this?” David choked out, his voice shattering with the agony of ultimate betrayal. “You unleashed Victoria on us? You brought Julian here?”

“Julian was an idiot who exceeded his instructions,” Eleanor sneered, pulling a small pearl-handled revolver from the pocket of her robe and leveling it directly at my chest. “Victoria was supposed to seduce you, take her payoff, and leave you broken so I could manage the estate alone. But you stayed with Claire. You fought for her.”

Suddenly, the French doors behind Eleanor exploded inward in a hail of shattered glass.

A drenched, bloodied figure lunged into the library from the storm—Victoria Ross, holding a jagged kitchen knife, her eyes crazed, her ivory gown soaked in mud and crimson.

“You lied to me, Eleanor!” Victoria screamed, lunging not at me, but straight for David’s mother. “You told me David would love me!”

David lunged forward to shield me—

A gunshot roared through the confined library, drowning out the thunder.

A body dropped to the floor with a sickening thud, followed by the sound of a heavy metallic object sliding across the bloody hardwood into the dark.

Outside on the lake, the deep, mechanical rumble of a high-speed speedboat engine roared to life, its searchlight sweeping across the shattered library windows.
