Chapter 26 - The Unraveling of Julian

Back in Chicago, the Vance Tower boardroom was an arena of suffocating tension. Eleven members of the board of directors sat around the forty-foot table of polished Brazilian rosewood.
Julian Rothschild sat at the opposite end of David, looking relaxed, checking his gold pocket watch. Victoria sat beside him, wearing a bespoke scarlet suit that screamed conquest, her fingers tapping rhythmically on the glossy mahogany.
“It is eleven-fifty-five, David,” Julian said with an icy, mocking politeness. “The London bondholders have executed their proxies in my favor. You have no majority, no liquidity, and no legal mechanism to contest the 2012 codicil. Resign as Chairman now, and I will permit you to keep your family’s residential properties in Lake Forest.”
Victoria leaned forward, her green eyes glittering with vicious delight. “Sign the release, David. It’s over. Claire isn't even here to hold your hand. She ran away to Europe the moment the ship started sinking. Just like a smart woman should.”
David didn't move. His face was an unreadable mask of carved granite. He looked at the antique clock on the wall. Eleven-fifty-seven.
“My wife didn't run, Victoria,” David said softly. “Claire went to clean up the mess my father left behind.”
The heavy mahogany double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Every head at the table turned.
I walked into the room, flanked not by corporate attorneys, but by two senior agents from the United States Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and an assistant attaché from the Department of Justice.
Julian’s smug expression flickered for the first time. He rose slowly from his seat. “What is the meaning of this theatrical nonsense? This is a private corporate meeting.”
“The meeting is concluded, Julian,” I said, walking down the length of the table with the leather binder in my hand. I slammed it down directly in front of Julian with a sound that reverberated through the silent room like a thunderclap.
“In your hands is the forensic banking audit from Banque Privée Genevoise,” I announced, turning to face the shocked board members. “In 2012, Baron Leopold Rothschild used David’s father to funnel seventy million euros of illicit capital out of Athens during the sovereign debt crisis. There was no legitimate mezzanine loan. It was an illegal money-laundering contract.”
Julian’s face went pasty white. “That is absurd—these documents are fabricated—”
“They bear the official seal of the Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s Office, authenticated four hours ago,” the senior DOJ agent stated, stepping forward and flashing his badge. “Furthermore, Mr. Rothschild, your claims of diplomatic immunity are void. The Austrian Foreign Ministry has just revoked your status after receiving documentation that your family used sovereign credentials to shield criminal extortion operations.”
A sharp, terrified gasp tore from Victoria’s throat. She stared at Julian, her face contorting into sudden panic. “Julian... what is he talking about? You told me our family was untouchable! You told me the codicil was foolproof!”
Julian didn't look at her. His cold eyes remained locked on me, his aristocratic mask completely crumbling, revealing the rabid cornered animal beneath.
“You insolent American bitch,” Julian hissed, taking a step toward me.
David moved before Julian could complete his stride. With blinding speed, David grabbed Julian by the lapels of his tailored suit, lifting him off his feet and slamming him back against the floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the Chicago skyline.
“Do not speak to my wife,” David growled, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, primal fury.
