Chapter 21 - The Diplomatic Incursion

The shattered crystal flute fell from David’s hand, the sharp sound of its impact muffled by the crimson runner beneath our feet. A droplet of vintage champagne mixed with a thin line of crimson blood where a jagged shard had grazed his palm, but his hand didn’t shake. His knuckles were bone-white, his jaw clenched with such intensity that the muscle ticked beneath his skin.
Across the silent, chandelier-lit expanse of the Cultural Center ballroom, two hundred pairs of eyes shifted between Julian Rothschild, Victoria, and us. The air smelled suddenly of chilled ozone and spilled wine.
Victoria stepped forward, her ivory silk gown whispering against the marble floor. Her eyes, painted with delicate feline wings of eyeliner, locked onto mine with an intoxicating mixture of arrogance and venom. Gone was the panicked inmate who had wept in the Kenosha interrogation room; in her place stood a woman who had pulled a continent of foreign capital out of thin air.
“Surprised, Claire?” Victoria murmured, her voice carrying through the acoustic vault of the ceiling. “You thought you could bury me in a county cell like a common thief. You thought you and David had rewritten the board.”
“You are a trespasser here, Victoria,” I said, my voice steady, cutting through the heavy hush of the hall. I didn't look down at David’s hand, though my fingers subtly found the edge of his dinner jacket, grounding him. “And whatever paperwork your brother is holding, it doesn't give you diplomatic immunity from federal wire fraud.”
Julian Rothschild smiled, a lazy, cultivated gesture that belonged in an Old World drawing room rather than a modern Chicago gala. He snapped his fingers, and one of the armed men behind him stepped forward, extending an embossed leather dossier to Marcus Caldwell, who had pushed his way through the frozen crowd of board members to stand at David’s shoulder.
“Read it, Counselor,” Julian said smoothly, his accent bearing the faint, aristocratic clip of central European boarding schools. “A sovereign order of extradition relief, countersigned by the Federal District Court of Eastern Wisconsin under Title 22 of the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act. My family holds honorary diplomatic status through our commercial attaché in Vienna. Victoria’s detention was an administrative error—one that the State Department has already rectified.”
David took a single, deliberate step toward the edge of the dais. “My father died eight years ago, Julian. His estate was settled, audited, and closed under the supervision of the Cook County Probate Court. If you think you can walk in here with a forged Austrian codicil and intimidate my wife, you’ve vastly underestimated who controls this city.”
“Your father was a brilliant financier, David, but a terrible partner,” Julian countered, his green eyes glinting like frozen emeralds under the chandeliers. “He built Sterling-Vance on credit lines backed by my family's private syndicate. The 2012 codicil isn't an inheritance claim. It is an execution clause. Fifty-one percent of the holding company’s voting shares were pledged as collateral against a seventy-million-euro mezzanine loan that was never repaid.”
A collective gasp rippled through the seated philanthropists and corporate executives. Marcus was already flipping through the pages of the folder, his weathered face draining of color with every line he read. He looked up at David, a subtle, grim jerk of his head signaling that the documentation, at least on its face, was terrifyingly authentic.
Victoria tilted her head, her lips parting in a wicked, triumphant curve. “Happy anniversary, Claire. Did you really think my sitting on his lap that night was just a dare?”
Before anyone could move, David raised his bleeding hand, turning calmly to the ballroom’s head of private security. “Escort our guests to the terrace for dessert. The gala is adjourned.”

Then he turned to Julian, his voice dropping to a low, lethal baritone. “My office. At midnight. Bring your attorneys, Julian. Because before dawn breaks over Lake Michigan, one of our families is going to be financially destroyed.”
