Chapter 5 - The Free Fall

By dawn, the world had exploded.

The front page of the *New York Post* featured a crystal-clear, high-definition photograph of Camden Pierce being escorted out of 740 Park Avenue in his socks and torn tuxedo, head hung in shame, while Lila Monroe stood on the curb wrapped in a cheap yellow hotel blanket, crying into her hands as rain began to fall. The headline screamed in bold black ink: **GROUNDED: THE HEIRESS STRIPS HER CHEATING CEO TO THE SHIRT.**

On TikTok and Instagram, the video of Lila stepping off my Gulfstream G650, tossing her hair and asking me to carry her bags, had garnered over forty million views in six hours. Memes had proliferated overnight. The phrase *"Are you here to carry our bags?"* had become the number-one trending audio across three continents.

Every luxury brand that had ever given Lila Monroe an influencer sponsorship had publicly issued termination notices before the stock market opened at 9:30 AM. Her modeling agency issued a sterile, two-sentence press release announcing they had severed all ties effective immediately.

Inside my corner office on the 52nd floor of Alden Tower, the morning sun poured through floor-to-ceiling glass, illuminating mahogany shelves and the brass models of the aircraft my father had built.

My assistant, Chloe, set down a steaming cup of Earl Grey tea alongside an updated financial briefing. "Mrs. Alden—excuse me, Ms. Alden—the board members have arrived. Every single institutional investor is in the main boardroom. But..."

"But what, Chloe?" I asked, taking a delicate sip.

"Lila Monroe is in the lobby downstairs," Chloe whispered. "Security stopped her at the turnstiles. She’s demanding to speak with you. She's creating an immense spectacle. The paparazzi outside are having a field day."

I set my teacup down with a sharp clink. "Send her up."

Chloe blinked in shock. "Up here? Ms. Alden, she's hysterical. She might—"

"Send her up, Chloe. With two armed guards outside my door."

Three minutes later, Lila was pushed into my office. The glamorous influencer who had sneered at me on the tarmac was gone. Her hair was unwashed, tied in a messy bun. Her eyes were swollen, red, and frantic. She wore an oversized gray hoodie and cheap sweatpants borrowed from whatever budget motel she had spent the last four hours in.

She fell to her knees before my desk, her hands clasped together in desperate prayer.

"Vivian, please!" she wept, tears instantly spilling over her raw cheeks. "I'm begging you! Make them stop! The internet is destroying me! Death threats, doxxing, my family's address got leaked online! Every brand dropped me! I don't have five dollars in my checking account because Camden's shared card is frozen! I have nowhere to go!"

I didn't rise from my leather high-back chair. I looked down at her with the cool detachment of a judge observing a convicted criminal.

"You knew he was married, Lila," I said, my voice smooth, quiet, and razor-sharp. "You wore my personalized Hermès scarf around your neck. You flew on my jet. You drank my vintage Krug. And when you saw me standing on the tarmac, you treated me like dirt under your shoe because you thought you had stolen my life."

"He told me you were an invalid!" Lila sobbed. "He told me you were crazy, that you lived in a clinic upstate! He promised me marriage! He promised me the world!"

"Ignorance is not an affirmative defense," I replied. "You wanted a shortcut to high society. You thought stepping over a woman who built this empire would have no consequences. Now, you are experiencing the full weight of reality."

"I'll do anything!" Lila cried, crawling closer until the guard stepped forward, planting a heavy boot between her and my desk. "Anything! Camden has a secret safe in his private office at the hangar! He kept flash drives! Bank accounts! Documents about Marcus Alden! I know the combination! I’ll give it all to you if you just call off the lawyers and give me fifty thousand dollars to leave the country!"

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the polished desk, my eyes locking onto hers.

May you like

"Give me the safe combination," I whispered. "And I might just let you keep your freedom."
