Chapter 10 - Midnight Ambush

By 11:45 PM, the executive war room on the 55th floor of Sterling Tower was operating at fever pitch.
Thirty quantitative traders, forensic corporate lawyers, and algorithmic financial engineers sat before glowing banks of monitors displaying global markets in real-time. Neon green and red numbers reflected off Julian's tailored shirt as he stood beside me, sleeves rolled up, barking orders into a wireless headset.
"Midnight in New York is noon in Singapore," I stated, staring at the global order book on the central wall display. "Marcus is sitting in his office right now, watching the tender offer clock tick down."
"T-minus ten minutes until the Asian tender offer window opens," the head trader announced. "Apex Sovereign's consortium has pre-loaded orders to acquire thirty-eight million shares of Alden Global Logistics."
"Vivian," Julian said, turning to me, his hand resting firmly on the back of my leather chair. "If we execute this squeeze, we are committing seventy percent of Sterling Group’s cash reserves alongside your family trust. If Marcus has a secondary credit line we haven't seen, we could face a massive margin squeeze ourselves."
"He doesn't have a secondary credit line," I said with absolute certainty. "Camden's ledger proved that Marcus leveraged every single asset he owned in Singapore to finance this buyout. He put up his real estate, his private aircraft, and his personal equity as collateral to secure the Middle Eastern sovereign loan. He has no floor underneath him."
"Then let's take the floor out completely," Julian said. He turned to the trading floor. "Open the buy orders. Deploy the Sterling-Alden Joint Syndicate accounts. Target every single short position held by Apex Sovereign. We buy at market price. No limits."
At exactly 12:00:00 AM, the digital clock struck zero.
On the screen, Marcus’s tender offer hit the wire. Instantly, an avalanche of selling orders appeared from Apex Sovereign, attempting to drive the price down to trigger the forced covenants before buying it back cheap.
"Now!" I ordered.
"Executing!" the head trader yelled.
Five hundred million dollars hit the market in a single microsecond.
Then another five hundred million.
Then a billion.
On the screen, the share price of Alden Global didn't plunge. It spiked.
$82.00... $95.00... $115.00... $140.00...
"They're caught!" a trader screamed, jumping out of his chair. "Marcus's short algorithm is trapped! The price is exploding past their margin threshold! Margin call triggered for Apex Sovereign!"
Across the Pacific, Marcus Alden’s empire was burning. Because he had shorted millions of shares he didn't own, he was now legally obligated to buy them back at whatever price the market demanded. And we owned ninety-two percent of the available float.
"Set the ask price to two hundred dollars a share," I commanded coldly.
"Two hundred?" Julian chuckled softly, shaking his head in admiration. "Vivian, you are merciless."
"He wanted to steal my family's legacy," I said, watching the numbers climb. "Mercy is an expense I cannot afford."
At 12:28 AM, the red numbers flashed violently.
A massive liquidation banner stamped across the screen: **APEX SOVEREIGN CAPITAL: TRADING HALT. MARGIN INSUFFICIENCY. AUTOMATIC LIQUIDATION INITIATED BY MONETARY AUTHORITY OF SINGAPORE.**
The trading room erupted into deafening cheers. Champagne corks popped against the soundproof walls. Traders were embracing, high-fiving, laughing in disbelief.
Marcus Alden had lost two point four billion dollars in twenty-eight minutes. His fund was insolvent. His assets were forfeit.
Julian turned to me, his dark eyes blazing with admiration. He extended his hand, but I bypassed it, stepping into his space and pulling his lapels toward me, pressing my lips firmly against his in a surge of triumphant adrenaline.
Julian responded instantly, his arm wrapping around my waist, pulling me tightly against him as the cheers of the room faded into background noise.

When he finally pulled back, breathing slightly faster, his eyes held mine. "Consider that the best trade I’ve ever made," he whispered.
