Chapter 3 - The Whispered Shadow

The roar of the Plaza ballroom faded into a dull, rhythmic thrum the moment Julian leaned closer. His cologne—vetiver, cedarwood, and the faint, crisp scent of autumn air—cut cleanly through the perfume and champagne haze of high society.
"Don't smile too broadly yet, Vivian," Julian murmured into my ear, his voice barely above a breath, yet resonant with steel. "Camden was an arrogant fool, yes. But an arrogant fool doesn't orchestrate offshore dummy accounts in the Cayman Islands with shell registrations in Zurich without a mastermind holding the strings."
I maintained my serene posture, keeping my chin elevated and my champagne flute poised in my manicured hand. The photographers were still flashing lenses from across the velvet ropes, capturing the image of the triumphant heiress reclaiming her crown.
"Explain," I said quietly, not letting my lips betray tension.
"The freeze order we filed caught eighty million dollars in diverted charter revenues," Julian said, his dark eyes surveying the room with predatory calm. "Camden thought he was funneling that money into private crypto wallets and Lila’s lavish lifestyle. But our forensic cyber team intercepted the ledger just twenty minutes ago. Half of that capital didn't go to Camden. It was funneled directly into Apex Sovereign."
A cold thrill shot straight down my spine. "Apex Sovereign is Marcus’s front."
"Exactly," Julian confirmed. "Your half-brother Marcus has been operating from Singapore for three years waiting for an opening. Camden didn't just sleep with a cheap Instagram model on your private jet, Vivian. He sold your family’s flight routes, your maintenance contracts, and your proprietary logistics codes to Marcus in exchange for a promised seat on Apex's board. Camden wasn't just committing adultery. He was committing corporate treason."
My grip tightened around the delicate stem of the crystal glass until I felt the pressure against my skin. Marcus Alden. My father’s illegitimate son, born of a brief affair, who had spent his entire adult life trying to tear down the legitimate Alden empire. My father had bought Marcus off with a fifty-million-dollar trust fund and an explicit ban from ever stepping onto Alden corporate soil.
"Camden thought he was replacing me," I whispered, a dark, razor-sharp smile cutting across my lips. "He thought he could use my family's jet to impress a vapid mistress while selling the tarmac beneath my feet to my worst enemy."
"He thought you were a passive socialite wife who would cry into her pillow and sign whatever separation agreement he drafted," Julian replied. "Now, Camden is ruined. But Marcus has already begun mobilizing. He holds forty percent of Pierce Aero's secondary debt notes through Apex. If those notes mature on Friday, he can trigger a hostile takeover before the probate court settles your divorce."
"Friday is forty-eight hours away," I said, meeting Julian’s intense gaze.
"Then we have forty-eight hours to burn his bridge to the ground," Julian smiled faintly. "First, let us ensure Camden Pierce has nowhere left to sleep tonight."

I drained the mineral water, set the glass down on a passing waiter’s silver tray, and smoothed the black silk of my gown. "Call the city marshals, Julian. It’s time to clean out the penthouse."
