Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

Three months later, the Chicago winter gave way to a crisp, brilliant spring. The ice on Lake Michigan melted into deep, churning blue waters, and the city hummed with the relentless energy of a new era.
Inside the Costa penthouse, the evening light painted the minimalist white walls in shades of amber and rose.
Clara stood by the open balcony doors, a glass of white wine in her hand, watching the city lights blink into existence one by one across the skyline. The duffel bag from River North had long since been unpacked and put away in the master walk-in closet, alongside a dozen new dresses Gabriel had insisted on buying her—none of which had ever been hidden away in a secret apartment.
Footsteps approached softly from behind. Strong arms slid around her waist, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest.
“You’re quiet tonight,” Gabriel murmured, resting his chin on her shoulder.
“I was just thinking,” Clara said, leaning her head back against his chest, breathing in the familiar scent of sandalwood and rain.
“About what?”
“About the audit.”
Gabriel chuckled, his chest vibrating against her back. “You and your audits. We survived Vance, we survived Marco, we survived the Marinos and a hostile corporate takeover. Can’t you take a night off from accounting?”
“I’m not doing accounting,” Clara smiled, turning slightly in his arms so she could look up into his dark, intense eyes. “I’m reviewing our assets.”
“And what do our assets look like?”
Clara raised her left hand, letting the platinum and sapphire ring catch the fading twilight.
“Immeasurable,” she whispered. “And completely un-auditable.”
Gabriel’s expression softened into something profound and absolute. He leaned down, capturing her lips in a slow, deep kiss that swept away all the remaining shadows of their past.

Down below, the city of Chicago roared on, a sprawling empire of steel, concrete, and ambition. But up here, high above the noise and the violence, there were no secrets left to hide.
