Chapter 10 - The Horizon Beyond

The private jet climbed steadily through the layer of thick gray clouds, breaking out into a blinding expanse of brilliant blue sky and golden sunlight.

Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was quiet and luxurious. Leather seats, polished mahogany tables, and the faint hum of jet engines cutting through the upper atmosphere.

Clara sat by the window, a laptop open on her tray table, though she wasn't looking at spreadsheets. She was watching the endless sea of clouds below them.

Across the aisle, Gabriel sat in a plush leather armchair, a thick dossier of corporate documents spread out on his lap. But his dark eyes weren’t reading the text; they were fixed entirely on her.

“You’re staring,” Clara said without turning her head, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips.

“I have a habit of looking at my most valuable assets,” Gabriel replied smoothly.

Clara finally turned her head, raising an eyebrow at him. “We’re on vacation, Gabriel. The Chicago docks are running smoothly, the council hasn't called once in two weeks, and your uncle is happily eating olives in Sicily. Put the paperwork away.”

Gabriel closed the dossier with a decisive snap. He stood up, walked across the narrow aisle, and slid into the seat directly beside her, pulling her laptop out of her lap and setting it on the opposite table.

“You’re right,” Gabriel murmured, taking her hands in his. The cool gold and sparkling sapphire of her ring caught the bright sunlight streaming through the cabin window. “No spreadsheets. No contracts. No enemies.”

“Where are we even going?” Clara asked, her dark eyes sparkling with genuine curiosity. For the first time in her life, she hadn’t booked the itinerary. Gabriel had handled every detail.

Gabriel leaned in close, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, his warm breath sending a familiar, electric shiver down her spine.

“Somewhere far away from boardrooms, wedding rings, and families,” Gabriel whispered. “A cliffside villa overlooking the Mediterranean. Just you, me, and a lot of very expensive wine.”

Clara let out a soft, genuine laugh—the kind of laugh she had only ever shared with him in the quietest, darkest hours after midnight, when the rest of the world couldn't reach them.

“Sounds like a terrible business plan,” she teased softly, wrapping her arms around his neck.

“The best kind,” Gabriel replied.

He kissed her then—deeply, passionately, and without a single shadow of doubt left between them.

As the private jet soared higher into the endless blue sky, cutting a straight line toward the horizon, Clara finally knew what it meant to win. She hadn’t walked away from Gabriel’s world, and he hadn’t let her go. Instead, they had built a new world together—one written not in blood or secret contracts, but in absolute, unbreakable devotion.

And for the first time in her life, the future stretched out before them, completely unwritten, and entirely theirs.
