Chapter 7 - The Price of Loyalty

The penthouse was blissfully quiet when they returned late that afternoon. The storm clouds over Lake Michigan had broken, letting brilliant, pale streaks of golden sunlight flood across the minimalist white floors.

Gabriel walked over to the floor-to-ceiling bar, poured two fingers of unadulterated bourbon into a crystal glass, and downed it in a single swallow.

Clara stood by the window, watching the tiny ants of cars crawling along Michigan Avenue far below. Her shoulders were tense, the adrenaline of the council meeting finally beginning to fade, leaving behind a dull, aching exhaustion in every muscle of her body.

Footsteps approached softly. A moment later, Gabriel’s arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her flush against his chest. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, his warm breath sending a familiar shiver down her spine.

“You were brilliant in there,” Gabriel murmured against her skin.

“I was terrified,” Clara admitted, her voice barely a whisper. “If Marco’s men had backing from more than half the capos, we wouldn’t be standing here right now.”

“They didn’t back him,” Gabriel said, turning her slowly in his arms so she was facing him. His dark eyes were soft—a vulnerability he showed to no one else on earth. “Because they knew you were right. And because they know I would burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone touch you.”

Clara looked up into his face. The sharp, ruthless crime boss was gone; in his place was simply the man she had loved in secret for years—flawed, dangerous, and completely hers.

“What happens to Marco?” she asked quietly.

“Exile,” Gabriel replied without hesitation. “He’ll spend the rest of his life in a villa in Sicily with no phone, no money, and guards who ensure he never steps foot in America again. His part in this family is finished.”

“And Isabella?”

Gabriel’s expression hardened slightly. “Her father called ten minutes ago. He knows Marco tried to frame us. The alliance holds, but the terms have changed. Isabella is staying at her estate in Geneva for the foreseeable future. The marriage remains on paper only—a ghost contract that neither of us will ever acknowledge.”

Clara felt a weight lift from her chest—a heavy, suffocating pressure she had carried since the moment she booked those white orchids.

“You’re still a married man, Gabriel,” she reminded him with a faint, tired smile.

“Only to the law,” Gabriel whispered, sliding his hands up to frame her face, his thumbs brushing across her cheekbones. “You are the only woman who rules this house. You are the only one who holds my life in her hands.”

Before she could answer, his lips met hers.

It wasn’t a gentle kiss. It was hungry, desperate, and filled with all the suppressed fury and passion of the last forty-eight hours. Clara tangled her fingers in his dark hair, pulling him closer, letting herself drown in the warmth of his body and the intoxicating scent of bourbon and rain.

The penthouse around them faded into nothingness. There were no contracts to sign, no councilmen to appease, no enemies waiting in the dark. There was only the steady rhythm of their breathing and the absolute, terrifying certainty that neither of them was ever going to walk away.
