Chapter 8 - The Desperate Ambush

The transition from a two-bedroom walk-up in Queens to Sebastian’s triplex penthouse on Central Park South was a whirlwind that felt more like a fairy tale than reality.
For the first forty-eight hours, the children explored the sprawling, sun-drenched residence with wide-eyed wonder. There were floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the park where our lives had collided, a private terrace with a heated playroom, and bedrooms that looked like they had been designed by royal architects.
Yet, despite the luxury and the impenetrable security, a heavy, unsaid tension lingered between Sebastian and me.
We had shared a past full of passion, cut short by monstrous cruelty, but four years of survival had built towering walls around my heart. At night, he slept in the master suite on the top floor, while I slept in the guest suite adjacent to the children's rooms. We were united as parents, but the fracture in our love remained delicate, waiting to see if it could truly bear the weight of reality.
On Thursday morning, the tranquility shattered.
I had stepped out onto the penthouse terrace with a mug of coffee while the kids were having a private tutoring session with Clara, whom Sebastian had hired as our full-time early education coordinator with an astronomical salary.
Vance stepped out onto the terrace, his face grim. “Mrs. Vale. Mr. Vale asked me to inform you that Thomas Hart has filed an emergency injunction in state supreme court.”
I set my mug down, my stomach tightening. “What kind of injunction?”
“He’s claiming that the Vale green-energy subsidiary misappropriated Hart Logistics’ proprietary shipping routes,” Vance explained, his voice tight. “It’s a frivolous corporate retaliation suit, designed to tank Vale Enterprises’ stock before the closing bell. But that’s not the dangerous part.”
“What is the dangerous part?”
“Clarissa Hart was spotted outside your old bakery in Queens this morning,” Vance said, handing me an iPad.
On the screen was a live video stream from a local news van. Clarissa Hart stood on the sidewalk outside *Rosa’s Sweet Shoppe*, surrounded by a dozen tabloid reporters. Beside her stood a sleazy, slick-haired man in a cheap suit whom I recognized with sickening horror: Greg Turner, my abusive, deadbeat ex-boyfriend from college who had vanished seven years ago after stealing my tuition money.
“...and Mr. Turner has conclusive evidence that he was cohabitating with Maya Lindell during the exact conception window of these children!” Clarissa’s voice shrieked through the iPad speakers. “This entire narrative of Sebastian Vale’s secret triplets is a fraudulent fabrication engineered by a serial grifter to extort the Vale estate! We are demanding a court-supervised, public DNA test through the state coroner’s office!”
The room seemed to spin.
Greg was smiling for the cameras, holding up an old, faded photograph of us from college, spinning a web of disgusting, fabricated lies for whatever six-figure payoff Thomas Hart had promised him.
“Mommy?”
I spun around. Owen stood in the doorway of the terrace, holding his stuffed dog, his gray eyes wide with confusion. “Why is that mean lady on the TV saying your name?”
Tears of pure, burning fury surged into my eyes. They weren't just attacking me anymore; they were trying to brand my children as fraudulent bastards on national television, dragging my past through the mud to save their failing social status.
Before I could answer Owen, the elevator doors of the penthouse chimed open with a violent chime.
Sebastian strode out. He had ripped off his tie, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, his jaw set in a line of terrifying, cold fury. He didn't look like a CEO dealing with a corporate threat; he looked like an apex predator whose den had been invaded.
“Vance,” Sebastian barked without breaking stride. “Get the car. We’re going to Queens.”
“Sebastian, wait!” I rushed forward, grabbing his arm. “You can’t go down there! That’s exactly what they want! Clarissa wants a public scene, she wants photos of you losing control, she wants to create enough doubt to trigger a shareholder revolt!”
Sebastian stopped. He looked down at my hand gripping his forearm, then looked up into my eyes. The sheer, unadulterated fire burning in his storm-gray eyes made my breath catch in my throat.
“She brought a stranger into the public square to claim fatherhood over my children, Maya,” Sebastian said, his voice shaking with a rage so profound it rattled the glass around us. “She insulted your honor on national television. She thinks because her father has shipping contracts and bought politicians, she can play games with the lives of the people I protect.”
“Then let the lawyers handle it!” I pleaded. “We have the certified DNA tests from Dr. Thorne!”
“Lawyers take months,” Sebastian replied, cupping my cheek with one trembling, burning hand. “Public perception is destroyed in hours. I spent four years being passive, letting paperwork and distance tear us apart. I will never sit back and let someone else fight for my family again.”
He looked past me, his eyes locking onto Owen, Noah, and Ivy, who were watching from the living room.
“Come with me, Maya,” Sebastian whispered, his eyes pleading with an intensity that pierced right through my defenses. “Let’s end this publicly, together. Once and for all.”
I looked at the television screen, where Greg was currently describing fabricated details of our non-existent relationship to a breathless tabloid reporter. Then I looked at Sebastian—the man who had crossed oceans of lies to find us, who had banished his own mother to protect us, who was ready to wage total war against the city’s most powerful dynasties for our honor.
The fear in my chest crystallized into pure, unbreakable diamond.

“Vance,” I said, turning toward the head of security. “Get my coat.”
