Chapter 5 - The War of the Elites

Clarissa stepped into my cramped living room with all the delicacy of a wrecking ball.

Her high-heeled boots clicked against the worn floorboards, her eyes sweeping over the threadbare couch, the plastic toy bins, and the faded walls with unmistakable disgust. Behind her, two private security guards in dark suits blocked the entrance, effectively trapping us inside.

“Clarissa,” Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and lethal that even her guards shifted uncomfortably. “Get out of this apartment. Immediately.”

“I’m not going anywhere, Sebastian,” she snapped, pulling off her sunglasses to reveal eyes blazing with manic fury. “Do you have any idea what’s happening in Manhattan right now? Page Six has already run a blind item about you chasing a stroller through Central Park yesterday. My father’s stock took a three-point hit this morning because rumors are swirling that our engagement is off!”

“Our engagement *is* off,” Sebastian said calmly, stepping forward until he stood directly between Clarissa and me. “In fact, it never existed. I never proposed to you, Clarissa. Our mothers arranged an understanding to appease the board. I never gave you a ring, and I never signed an agreement.”

Clarissa’s face turned an ugly shade of crimson. “You wore my family’s name like a shield to keep the institutional investors happy! My father poured fifty million dollars into your green energy initiative on the condition that we merge our families! You think you can just discard me for... for this?”

She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at me. “A low-class baker living in squalor? A woman who trapped you with a litter of bastard children?”

Before she could finish the sentence, Sebastian crossed the distance between them with terrifying speed. He didn't touch her, but the sheer, towering fury radiating from him forced Clarissa to take an involuntary step backward, stumbling against her own bodyguard.

“If you speak about Maya or my children in that tone again,” Sebastian whispered, every syllable coated in venom, “I will personally dismantle your father’s logistics firm contract by contract. I will short your family’s stock into oblivion, and I will ensure the Hart name is entirely erased from New York society before the week is out. Do not test me, Clarissa.”

Clarissa gasped, her aristocratic composure completely shattering under the sheer weight of his threat. She looked at Sebastian, seeing for the first time the ruthless corporate predator that Wall Street feared, completely stripped of high-society politeness.

Realizing she had lost Sebastian, Clarissa turned her poisonous glare on me.

She reached into her designer bag, pulled out a certified bank draft, and tossed it onto the kitchen counter. The paper slid across the laminate, stopping right beside my tea mug.

I looked down. The amount printed on the check was ten million dollars.

“Take it,” Clarissa hissed, her voice trembling with hatred. “Take the money and take those brats to California, Europe, anywhere. Sign a non-disclosure agreement promising you will never claim Sebastian is their father, and I will have my father match that amount. Twenty million dollars, Maya. That’s more than you or your gutter family would make in ten lifetimes.”

I stared at the check for three seconds.

Then, I picked it up, looked Clarissa dead in the eye, and tore it in half.

Then I tore it into quarters.

I let the shredded pieces flutter down onto the toes of her expensive Italian leather boots.

“My children are not for sale, Miss Hart,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and cold as winter rain. “And neither am I. You think money buys everything because your family bought you your social standing, your wardrobe, and your manners. But it can’t buy Sebastian’s love, and it certainly can’t buy my children’s future. Get out of my home before I throw a bucket of mop water on your coat.”

Clarissa let out a strangled shriek of rage. “You’ll regret this! Both of you! My father is speaking to the Vale board right now! By five o’clock today, Sebastian, you will be ousted as CEO! You’ll be nothing but an unemployed failure with three mouths to feed!”

“Tell your father to convene the board,” Sebastian said coldly, crossing his arms over his chest. “Tell him I’ll be there in person. And tell him to bring his resignation from the advisory committee while he’s at it.”

Clarissa glared at us with murderous intensity, spun on her heel, and stormed out into the hallway, her guards scrambling behind her. The heavy door slammed shut, echoing through the small apartment.

Silence descended once more, thick and suffocating.

I looked at Sebastian, my chest heaving. “Is that true? Can they strip you of the company?”

Sebastian didn't answer immediately. He looked at the torn pieces of the check on the floor, then looked up at me, a profound, unreadable expression in his storm-gray eyes.

“My father built Vale Enterprises from the ground up,” he said quietly. “I’ve spent the last ten years expanding it into a global conglomerate. But none of it matters, Maya. Not compared to what I found in this room today.”

“Sebastian, don't be naive,” I urged, panic creeping back into my voice. “Your mother and the Harts will tear you apart in the press. They’ll paint me as a gold-digger, they’ll call our kids illegitimate, they’ll drag us through every tabloid in the country!”

Sebastian stepped closer, reaching out to gently clasp my trembling hands in his. His skin was warm, his touch so familiar it made my throat ache with unshed tears.

“They will try,” Sebastian said softly. “Which is why we are not going to hide. Tonight is the annual Metropolitan Children’s Charity Gala. The entire New York elite will be there. The press, the board of directors, the Harts, and my mother.”

I pulled my hands back, my eyes widening with dread. “What are you saying?”

May you like

“I’m saying the game of shadows ends tonight,” Sebastian declared, his eyes flashing with lethal determination. “You and the children are coming to Manhattan. By tomorrow morning, the entire world will know that Owen, Noah, and Ivy are my legitimate heirs—and that you are the only woman who has ever held my heart.”
