Chapter 6 - The Golden Cage

By three in the afternoon, my humble Queens apartment had been completely transformed into a high-end command center.

Sebastian’s private security detail, now thoroughly vetted and led by a former Secret Service agent named Vance, stood guard at every entrance of the building. Downstairs, a sleek Mercedes van had arrived, delivering an army of stylists, tailors, and personal shoppers carrying garment bags bearing the logos of Fifth Avenue fashion houses.

The kids thought it was a magical game.

Ivy was twirling around the tiny living room in a custom emerald-green velvet dress, admiring the matching satin ribbons in her hair. Owen and Noah stood side-by-side on the couch, looking impossibly handsome and miniature-regal in matching navy wool suits with silk ties that Sebastian had personally knelt down to knot for them.

“Mommy, look!” Noah beamed, sticking out his chest. “I look like the man on the magazine!”

My heart squeezed painfully. He didn't just look like the man on the magazine; he looked like the future of a multibillion-dollar empire.

When the stylists finally turned me around to face the full-length mirror they had brought in, I barely recognized the woman staring back. The faded cotton sweater and worn jeans were gone, replaced by an off-the-shoulder gown of midnight-blue silk that cascaded to the floor like liquid night. A delicate diamond pendant rested at the base of my throat—a piece Sebastian had discreetly handed to the stylist, whispering that it had belonged to his grandmother, the only Vale woman who had married for love.

Sebastian entered the room, having changed into a bespoke black tuxedo that fit him with devastating elegance.

He stopped in the doorway, his breath catching audibly in his throat as his eyes raked over me. For a long, suspended moment, the chaos of the impending gala, the corporate war, and the four years of agony vanished.

“You take my breath away, Maya,” he murmured, stepping toward me with quiet reverence. “Just like you did the first night I saw you at that charity auction five years ago.”

“I’m terrified, Sebastian,” I admitted, my voice trembling as I reached up to touch the cold diamond at my neck. “Clarissa’s father, your mother... they’re going to throw everything they have at us. The press will tear my background to shreds.”

Sebastian gently took my face in his large, warm hands, his thumbs stroking the soft skin of my cheeks. His gray eyes held an unshakeable, fierce certainty that made the ground beneath my feet feel solid for the first time in years.

“Let them try,” he whispered, his forehead gently resting against mine. “Four years ago, I let my family dictate my life because I thought duty came before happiness. I lost the only thing that gave my life meaning, and I lived in a hollow hell as a consequence. I will burn every bridge in Manhattan before I let them touch you or our children again.”

A soft knock at the open door broke our trance. Vance stood there, checking his tactical watch. “Mr. Vale, the armored motorcade is positioned. The gala red carpet has been open for thirty minutes. The press corps is at maximum capacity.”

Sebastian pulled back slowly, taking my hand and lacing his strong fingers through mine. With his other hand, he reached down and scooped up Ivy, while Owen and Noah proudly took hold of my dress and Sebastian’s trouser leg.

“Are you ready to claim what’s yours, Maya?” he asked softly.

I looked down at my three children—their bright eyes, their innocent smiles, their complete trust in me. For four years, I had hidden in the shadows to protect them. But the shadows were no longer safe. The only way forward was to step directly into the blinding light.

“I’m ready,” I said.

The drive into Manhattan was surreal. A three-car motorcade with police escort sliced through the evening rush-hour traffic, gliding across the Queensboro Bridge like a dark arrow aimed straight at the heart of the city’s elite.

As we pulled up to the grand entrance of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the flashbulbs were already erupting like an explosive wave of white light. Hundreds of photographers, society reporters, and curious onlookers were lined up behind velvet ropes. Through the tinted windows, I could see Clarissa Hart and her father, billionaire shipping magnate Thomas Hart, standing near the top of the grand staircase, surrounded by a swarm of microphones, playing the role of aggrieved high-society victims.

Beside them stood Victoria Vale, dripping in emeralds, her expression cold and triumphant as she orchestrated the media narrative.

The car came to a smooth halt.

Vance stepped out and opened the door. The roar of the crowd and the blinding flash of cameras washed over us like a tidal wave.

Sebastian stepped out first. A collective gasp rippled through the press corps. The chatter of dozens of reporters instantly died, replaced by the frantic, mechanical clicking of hundreds of camera shutters firing simultaneously.

Sebastian didn't look at the cameras. He turned back toward the open door, reached his hand inside, and helped me step out onto the red carpet.

The crowd went completely wild.

“Mr. Vale! Who is she?”

“Sebastian, is the engagement to Clarissa Hart officially over?”

“Who is the woman in the blue dress?”

Sebastian ignored the shouting reporters. He leaned back into the vehicle and lifted Ivy into his arms. Then, he offered his other hand to Owen and Noah, who stepped out onto the red carpet beside me, their little faces illuminated by the relentless flashbulbs.

At the top of the grand staircase, Clarissa’s smug smile instantly froze. Thomas Hart’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble steps.

And Victoria Vale looked down at the three children walking up the stairs toward her, her face draining of color until she looked like a corpse draped in couture.

Sebastian stopped halfway up the grand staircase, right in front of the central bank of television cameras. He pulled a small wireless microphone from the podium, facing the entire world with his family gathered around him.

“Good evening,” Sebastian’s deep, commanding voice boomed across the plaza, silencing every reporter in an instant. “For four years, rumors have circulated regarding my personal life and the succession of Vale Enterprises. Tonight, I am putting those rumors to rest.”

He turned, gently resting his hand on my waist, pulling me close against his side.

“This is Maya Vale. My wife. The only woman I have ever married, and the only woman I will ever love.”

A collective shockwave tore through the crowd. Reporters scrambled, shouting over one another, but Sebastian held up a single hand, commanding absolute silence.

“And these are our children,” Sebastian continued, his voice thick with unyielding pride. “Owen, Noah, and Ivy Vale. The sole and legitimate heirs to the Vale legacy. Any entity, any individual, or any media outlet that attempts to slander their legitimacy or attack their mother will face the full, unmitigated weight of the Vale legal and financial apparatus.”

Sebastian turned his gaze slowly up the stairs, locking eyes with his mother and the Harts.

May you like

“The board meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning is canceled,” Sebastian concluded, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “Because the Vale family has already made its decision.”
