Chapter 7 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Sarah stopped dead in her tracks. The fake tears dried on her cheeks instantly, replaced by a grotesque, frozen paralysis.
"Wiretaps?" she choked out.
Marcus reached into his pocket with his left hand, pulled out a small digital display unit, and set it on the dining table. He tapped the screen.
The dining room was suddenly filled with Sarah's own voice, crystal clear, echoing off the high ceilings:
*“...I'm dosing her now. In twenty minutes, she'll have another violent sensory meltdown, and I'll have the footage we need for the emergency custody petition...”*
Then Julian's voice:
*“...Marcus will be so unhinged by his daughter’s sudden institutionalization that his partners will enforce the key-man disability clause... we split the forty-two million fifty-fifty...”*
Then Sarah’s voice again, sharp and vicious:
*“...having Marcus touch me with those sad, pathetic eyes. It made me want to vomit...”*
Julian lowered his hand from his jacket slowly, his shoulders sagging, his eyes darting frantically toward the hallway exits. "Marcus... listen to me. This wasn't my idea. Sarah approached me in Paris three years ago. She knew Hannah was sick before you did. She planned the whole thing."
"You coward!" Sarah shrieked, lunging at Julian with her manicured nails bared, scratching across his cheek and drawing thin ribbons of blood. "You miserable, parasitic rat! You set up the doctor! You supplied the scopolamine!"
"Shut up!" Julian roared, shoving her violently to the floor. She crashed against the sideboard, silver cutlery clattering down around her head.
Julian turned back to Marcus, raising both hands in a pleading gesture. "Marcus, take the money. Take the Rhode Island house. I have twelve million in offshore bonds I can transfer to your private account tonight. Just let me walk out that door. You can have her. Do whatever you want with her!"
Marcus looked at the two of them—one crawling on the floor among shattered glass and spilled wine, the other sweating and begging for his pathetic life.
"You think this is about money, Julian?" Marcus asked softly.
He stepped forward, the barrel of the pistol never wavering from Julian’s chest.
"You poisoned my six-year-old daughter. You sat in my house, drank my liquor, and plotted to turn an innocent child into a chemical vegetable so you could pay off your debts in Monaco."
"Marcus, please—"
"Where is Lily?" Sarah suddenly hissed from the floor, her eyes wild, her chignon coming undone, looking like a cornered animal. "Marcus, where is she?! She was in her room! She’s supposed to be—"
"Lily is two hundred miles away, Sarah," Marcus said, looking down at her with absolute disgust. "She’s with Hannah’s mother. Safe. Warm. And drinking fresh juice that doesn't have your chemical rot in it."
Sarah’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred. All the elegance, all the softness, all the curated charm dissolved into the venomous bile that had lived inside her all along.
"She’s a broken little freak anyway!" Sarah screamed, spitting blood from her split lip. "Just like her pathetic mother! You think you're so smart, Vance?! You don't have enough to hold us! My father is a federal magistrate! Dr. Henderson will testify that Lily was clinically unstable! It's your word against two licensed physicians and me! You shoot us, you spend the rest of your life in Sing Sing!"
Marcus smiled. It was a cold, terrifying sight.
"I’m not going to shoot you, Sarah," Marcus said. "A bullet is far too quick for what you deserve."
