Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

Marcus looked at the clock on his laptop: 2:15 PM.

His phone buzzed. It was an automated calendar alert: *Flight 442 to Chicago O’Hare - Arrived.*

Right on schedule, Marcus picked up his phone, switched the outgoing caller ID through his Chicago corporate VPN, and dialed Sarah.

She answered on the second ring, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. "Marcus! Did you land safely? How was the flight?"

"Smooth," Marcus said, keeping his vocal cords loose, mimicking the low, drained timbre of an overworked executive. "The weather in Chicago is miserable. Sleet and rain. The board meeting got pushed back to tomorrow morning at eight."

"Oh, sweetheart, I’m so sorry," she cooed. "You must be exhausted. Don't worry about anything here. Lily had a quiet lunch and she's napping now. Everything is peaceful."

"Did she finish her juice this morning?"

A split-second hesitation on the line. "Every drop. Why do you ask?"

"Just checking. She looked pale when I left." Marcus paused, letting the silence stretch just long enough to make her skin prickle. "Sarah... about what you said earlier. About the institutional support."

"Yes?" Her voice leaned forward, sharp with anticipation.

"Maybe... maybe you're right," Marcus said, letting a tremor of defeated resignation slip into his words. "Maybe I've been in denial. Hannah's death broke something in Lily that I can't fix. If Dr. Henderson thinks an evaluation is necessary... I won't stand in the way."

On the other end of the line, Marcus could almost hear her heart racing with triumph.

"Oh, Marcus," she sighed, playing the role of the devoted, supportive partner to perfection. "You are such a wonderful father for admitting that. It takes so much strength to put her needs before your pride. I’ll make sure Henderson has everything ready for when you get back. Just focus on your work."

"I will," Marcus said softly. "I'll see you tomorrow night, Sarah."

"I love you," she said.

"Goodbye."

Marcus hung up. He looked across the hotel desk at Liam Croft, who had arrived twenty minutes earlier carrying two heavy black Pelican cases. Liam was an ex-SAS operative who had spent the last fifteen years running high-net-worth risk management in North America. He was broad-shouldered, quiet, and possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of surveillance and counter-insurgency.

"We have eighteen hours before the school bus arrives at eight tomorrow morning," Liam said, opening the first case to reveal six military-grade signal repeaters and miniature body-worn audiovisual transmitters. "What's the play, Marcus? We drop this evidence on the Greenwich DA, Julian Moreau skips the country on his forged Cypriot passport, and Sarah claims Julian coerced her under threat of violence."

"Julian isn't skipping the country," Marcus said, his voice deadly quiet. "Julian is coming back to my house tonight. You heard the audio. He wants the original Rhode Island deed and the maritime bearer shares stored in the master study safe."

"The biometric safe?" Liam raised an eyebrow. "Sarah doesn't have your retinas or your thumbprints."

"No," Marcus said, a cold, predatory smile finally touching his lips. "She doesn't. Which means she’s going to use the one thing she thinks can bypass the protocol: Hannah’s secondary legacy key, which she believes is hidden in Lily's bedroom."

Marcus stood up, buttoning his jacket. "We aren't going to the police yet, Liam. Because the police deal with crimes that have already occurred. I want Sarah and Julian to commit every single felony on ultra-high-definition, multi-angle, time-stamped, uncompressed 4K video with toxicological confirmation on record."

"And Lily?" Liam asked, his eyes sharp. "You leave that girl in that house with that woman for one more hour, Marcus, and you're crossing a line."

"Lily isn't spending the night in that house," Marcus said. "Sarah thinks Lily is napping in the den. Call Evelyn."

Evelyn was Hannah's mother. A fierce, seventy-two-year-old matriarch of an old Newport shipping dynasty, Evelyn despised Sarah from the moment Marcus introduced her. She had been barred from visiting the Greenwich estate after Sarah orchestrated an argument three months ago, claiming Evelyn was "confusing Lily's developmental therapy."

"Evelyn has been waiting for an excuse to run Sarah over with a tractor," Liam muttered, pulling out his phone.

"Tell her to be at the perimeter gate on North Street at exactly 5:30 PM," Marcus instructed. "I'm going in through the carriage house."
