Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Study

At 8:30 PM, the storm intensified, rattling the heavy double-hung windows of the master estate.

Sarah sat at the long mahogany dining table, her second glass of Pinot Noir in hand. She looked at her watch. Lily had been unusually quiet in the den for the last two hours, but Sarah wasn't concerned. The dose she had prepared in the afternoon milk was strong enough to keep a grown man groggy and disoriented.

The doorbell didn't ring. Instead, the side door of the mudroom chimed softly as a private access code was entered.

Julian Moreau walked into the dining room, shaking the rain from his cashmere scarf. He looked wet, irritated, and electric with adrenaline.

"Where is she?" Julian demanded, tossing his gloves onto the antique table.

"Upstairs in her room, asleep," Sarah replied smoothly, taking a slow sip of wine. "I checked twenty minutes ago. She's completely unresponsive. The fern in the den was knocked over—she must have stumbled around before passing out. Perfect evidence of motor-control failure."

Julian let out a sharp, ragged laugh. "Beautiful. Henderson is already drafting the emergency transport order. The private ambulance will be here at 6:00 AM. We pick her up, deliver her to the clinic in Green Mountain, and by 9:00 AM, Marcus Vance will return from Chicago to find his house empty and a court summons on his kitchen island."

"Did you bring the transfer papers for the Rhode Island property?" Sarah asked, standing up and closing the distance between them, wrapping her arms around his neck.

"Right here," Julian murmured, reaching into his interior pocket and pulling out a thick, legal-sized envelope sealed with red wax. "The moment we file the emergency conservatorship, this document triggers the liquidation clause. Hannah’s family trust will release forty-two million dollars in bearer bonds directly to the shell account in Grand Cayman. We split it fifty-fifty, just like we planned when I put you in that gallery in SoHo."

Sarah kissed him, a hard, triumphant press of lips. "You have no idea how sick I am of playing the grieving stepmother. Listening to that brat talk about her dead mother... having Marcus touch me with those sad, pathetic eyes. It made me want to vomit."

"Well, my darling," Julian whispered against her neck, "by tomorrow morning, the Vance family will be nothing more than a profitable memory."

"A very profitable memory," a voice said from the shadows of the doorway.

Sarah screamed, jumping backward so violently her wine glass shattered across the parquet floor, ruby liquid splashing like arterial spray across her cream trousers.

Julian whipped around, his right hand instantly reaching toward his jacket pocket.

Marcus Vance was leaning against the mahogany doorframe.

He was still wearing his dark suit, his tie loosened, his eyes as cold and empty as an open grave. In his right hand, resting casually against his thigh, was a heavy black Sig Sauer P226 pistol.

"Don't reach for the Glock in your waistband, Julian," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm, barely louder than a whisper. "The safety on mine is already off. And unlike you, I actually know how to shoot."

Julian froze, his hand half-submerged inside his coat. His handsome face drained of all color, leaving behind a gray, sickly mask of terror.

"Marcus..." Sarah gasped, clutching her chest, her voice trembling into a desperate, frantic octave. "Marcus, oh thank God! Julian broke in! He has a gun! He was threatening me! He said if I didn't help him steal Lily's trust fund, he would kill her!"

She took two steps toward Marcus, tears instantly springing to her eyes—a virtuoso performance of terror and victimhood. "He's insane, Marcus! He's Hannah's stepbrother! He's been stalking us for months!"

Marcus didn't move an inch. He didn't blink. He simply looked at her, his eyes carrying the weight of an executioner’s axe.

"You really are remarkable, Sarah," Marcus whispered. "You could have won an Academy Award. If only I hadn't spent the last six hours listening to your bedroom wiretaps."
