Chapter 8 - The Public Unraveling

By noon, the financial world was in a state of absolute seismic shock. Breaking news banners flashed crimson across Bloomberg, CNBC, and the BBC: *Wynn Global Assets Frozen Amid Emergency Court Injunction; Founder Richard Wynn Under Criminal Investigation for Historical Fraud.*
Social media platforms, particularly Facebook and X, erupted into a feeding frenzy. Within hours, a leaked video of the emergency injunction notice being served at the Mayfair headquarters went viral, racking up millions of views. Netizens across the globe dug into the sudden downfall of one of Britain’s most untouchable billionaires, unearthing old rumors of corporate sabotage and a brilliant female engineer who had mysteriously vanished from the industry two decades ago.
Inside the high-stakes conference room on the twentieth floor of Hale Capital, the atmosphere was electric. Mara sat at the head of a long glass boardroom table, flanked by a team of elite corporate litigators and financial forensic experts.
Adrian stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the chaotic scene unfolding on the street below, where a swarm of journalists and camera crews had surrounded the building. He turned around, holding a tablet displaying trending topics worldwide.
“#JusticeForMaraVail is currently the number one trending hashtag globally,” Adrian announced, a hint of a smile touching his lips. “Public sentiment is entirely on your side. The internet has already dug up your old patent filings from nineteen-ninety-eight. They’re calling you the 'Rightful Queen of Tech' who was stolen by a corporate thief.”
Mara stared at the screen, watching clips of her younger self flashed alongside grainy photographs of Richard Wynn being escorted out of his penthouse by British authorities earlier that morning. The heavy, suffocating weight that had chained her soul to the seabed for twenty-four years finally dissolved into dust.
The heavy oak door of the conference room swung open, and her lead litigator, a sharp-eyed barrister named Arthur Vance, stepped inside carrying a stack of fresh documents.
“Ms. Vail, the defense has realized they have zero legal recourse,” Vance announced, his voice beaming with triumph. “Richard Wynn’s legal team has reached out for a settlement conference. They are willing to hand over full operational control of Wynn Global, resign all board positions, and liquidate remaining personal holdings to avoid a protracted criminal trial.”
Mara looked up, meeting Vance’s gaze calmly. “A settlement? After twenty-four years of solitary confinement, ruined health, and a stolen life, he thinks a settlement will wipe the slate clean?”
“What do you want to do, Mara?” Adrian asked, walking over and resting a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “We can crush him completely in open court. Let the world hear every single detail of what he did.”

Mara stood up slowly, smoothing down her charcoal blazer. Her eyes hardened with a brilliant, unforgiving light. “No, Arthur. Tell his lawyers we accept the handover of Wynn Global, but with one non-negotiable condition: Richard Wynn must resign in person, live-streamed to the entire world, and confess to every single crime he committed against me and the public.”
