Chapter 7 - The Shattered Alibi

Richard Wynn gripped the edge of his mahogany desk so hard his knuckles turned white, the skin stretched taut over bone. For a fleeting second, blind panic flashed in his eyes, but decades of ruthlessly crushing rivals and manipulating global markets quickly reasserted themselves. He swallowed hard, forcing his breathing to steady, and leaned back in his leather chair with a calculated, dismissive smirk.

“You’re playing a very dangerous game, whoever you are,” Richard spat, trying to regain his footing. “ Trespassing in a private corporate facility, impersonating a deceased individual. Security will have you thrown out onto the street before you can blink.”

Mara didn’t flinch. She simply tilted her head, a sardonic amusement playing on her lips. “Impersonating? Richard, look closely at my face. Do you really want to call the police and have them run facial recognition and dental records? Let’s invite Scotland Yard right now. Let’s talk about the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands registered under a shell company called *Seabrook Holdings* back in nineteen-ninety-nine.”

At the mention of *Seabrook Holdings*, Richard’s carefully constructed mask completely fractured. The arrogant smirk vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated horror. He lurched forward, slamming his palms onto the desk.

“How do you know that name?” he hissed, his voice dropping to a venomous whisper. “Who told you?”

“No one had to tell me, Richard. I wrote the damn incorporation papers,” Mara said softly, stepping right up to the edge of his desk and leaning down so their eyes were level. “You framed me for corporate espionage, stole my patent algorithms, bribed a federal judge, and shipped me off to a federal penitentiary while you took the credit and built an empire on my stolen genius. Did you really think I wouldn't spend every waking moment of the last twenty-four years plotting this exact conversation?”

Before Richard could formulate a response, Adrian Hale stepped forward from the shadows near the elevator. He tossed a thick leather-bound dossier onto the desk, the heavy thud echoing loudly in the silent penthouse.

“Those are original copies of the wire transfers, signed confessions from the perjured witnesses you paid off in Dublin and Zurich, and a full forensic audit conducted by my firm over the last month,” Adrian said, his voice dripping with ice. “Every single asset tied to Wynn Global is currently frozen under an emergency injunction issued by the High Court thirty minutes ago.”

Richard’s gaze darted to the dossier, then up to Adrian, recognition finally dawning on him like a tidal wave of destruction. “Hale... You’re Adrian Hale. The venture capitalist who just liquidated half his European portfolio. You’re backing her?”

“Not just backing her, Richard,” Adrian said, stepping beside Mara and wrapping a protective arm around her waist. “I’m dismantling everything you built to ensure she gets every single penny, every share, and every title back.”

Richard’s breath hitched. He realized in that instant that his empire—the glittering tower of glass and steel—was nothing more than a house of cards built on quicksand, and the tide had finally come in.
