Chapter 4 - The Shadows Within

The predawn air over the harbor was thick with ocean mist and the scent of rotting wood and diesel fuel. Warehouse 42 was an abandoned shipyard facility belonging to the Moretti empire—a cavernous concrete structure surrounded by high chain-link fences and razor wire.

Inside, twenty heavily armed capos and lieutenants stood in a tense semicircle under flickering industrial halogen lamps. At the center stood Julian Moretti. He looked impeccable in a camel-hair cashmere coat, his face a masterclass in performative grief.

"My brothers," Julian was saying, his voice cracking with orchestrated sorrow. "The Bratva breached our perimeter while Vincent was inspecting the southern border. They took little Mia from her bed. I pursued them to the riverbank, but... I was too late. The river took her."

Murmurs of shock, fury, and bloodlust rippled through the assembled men. These were killers, but the Moretti code had always held one sacred line: family, especially children, were off-limits.

"Vincent is broken," Julian continued, wiping a fake tear from his eye. "He has locked himself away in grief. Until he recovers, the family needs leadership. We must strike the Russians tonight! We burn their clubs, we slaughter their captains, and we claim the city in blood!"

"A stirring speech, cousin," a voice echoed from the high rafters of the warehouse.

The entire room went dead silent. The shadows near the loading dock shifted, and Vincent Moretti stepped out of the darkness into the harsh yellow glare of the lamps.

Behind him walked Marco, holding an assault rifle at low ready. And beside Vincent walked Clara Mendoza, wearing a clean dark coat Vincent had provided, carrying Mia securely in her arms. The little girl was awake, her golden hair resting against Clara’s shoulder, her eyes wide as she looked down at the gathering of armed men.

Julian’s face drained of every drop of color. He staggered back half a step, his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish. "V-Vincent... Mia? But... the scouts said—"

"The scouts told you the river was empty, didn't they, Julian?" Vincent said, his voice echoing off the corrugated iron roof with the terrible weight of impending judgment. "Because you paid two men ten thousand dollars to dump a six-year-old child into the freezing currents."

The capos looked between Julian and Vincent, the air crackling with sudden, deadly confusion.

"That's a lie!" Julian shrieked, panic cracking his smooth exterior. "Vincent has lost his mind to grief! That woman—who is she? She’s an infiltrator! She’s working with our enemies! Kill them! Kill them now!"

Not a single capo moved. The loyalty of the Moretti soldiers was forged in iron, and Vincent was their sovereign.

"Mia," Vincent said gently, without looking away from his cousin. "Tell your uncles who gave you the bitter milk."

Mia tightened her grip on Clara’s coat, pointing a small, trembling finger directly at Julian. "Uncle Julian gave it to me. He told me it would take me to Mommy. And then the bad men put me in the black car."

A collective gasp echoed across the warehouse. Old Capo Santoro, a man who had served Vincent’s father, spat onto the concrete floor. "You poisoned a child, Julian? Our Don's only blood?"

"She’s lying! She was hallucinating!" Julian screamed, his hand darting inside his coat toward his weapon.

*BANG.*

A shot rang out, echoing deafeningly in the cavernous space. Julian screamed, collapsing to his knees as his gun skittered across the floor, his right hand shattered by a bullet fired with pinpoint accuracy from Vincent’s Beretta.

Vincent didn't lower the gun. He walked slowly toward his kneeling cousin, the click of his polished leather shoes sounding like the ticking of an executioner's clock.

"You wanted to take my empire, Julian," Vincent said, placing the smoking barrel directly against Julian’s forehead. "You could have tried to shoot me in the back. You could have challenged me like a man. But you touched my daughter. You touched the only light Sarah left behind."

"Vincent... please... we share the same blood!" Julian wept, pressing his bleeding hand to his chest. "I was weak! The Bratva promised me everything—they offered me half the territory if I eliminated your lineage!"

"Then go collect your reward from Sarah in hell," Vincent whispered.

Clara turned Mia’s face into her chest, shielding the child’s eyes with her palm.

*BANG.*

The gunshot echoed once, and the traitor slumped forward onto the cold concrete. Vincent stood over the body for a silent, terrible moment, before turning his gaze to his captains.

"The house is clean," Vincent declared, his voice carrying the finality of an emperor. "Any man who conspired with him has one hour to leave this city. If the sun rises and you are still within my borders, you will join him."

The capos lowered their heads in unison. "Yes, Don Moretti."
