Chapter 3 - Poison in the Tea

The penthouse on 5th Avenue was not a home; it was a modern fortress of reinforced steel, blast-resistant glass, and state-of-the-art surveillance. Within minutes of their arrival, an elderly doctor named Vance—pale and visibly terrified—had set up a sterile emergency bay in the master suite.

Clara took charge immediately. She stripped off her soaked thrift-store jacket, scrubbed her hands with surgical soap, and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Dr. Vance.

"It’s aconite," Clara stated firmly, smelling the faint, bitter trace from the child’s gastric wash. "Monkshood. Julian didn't use a synthetic toxin that could be easily traced to a pharmacy. He used an organic alkaloid. It induces ventricular arrhythmias and paralysis."

Dr. Vance’s hands trembled as he held the syringe. "The dosage... for a six-year-old child, it's lethal."

"Give me the atropine and the charcoal suspension," Clara snapped, her medical instincts completely overriding any awareness of the armed mobsters guarding the doorway. "Now, Vance! Move!"

Vincent stood motionless against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest. He was watching Clara. In the underworld, people bowed to him out of terror or greed. But this woman, whose shoes were literally falling apart, whose fingers were red and blistered from the cold, was fighting for his daughter’s life with the ferocity of a lioness.

For two agonizing hours, the penthouse was a battlefield. Mia seized once, her small body arching off the examination bed as alarms shrieked from the portable monitor. Vincent took a sudden, violent step forward, his composure shattering, but Clara physically pushed him back.

"Stay out of my way if you want her to breathe!" Clara roared at the mafia kingpin.

Marco reached for his gun at the disrespect, but Vincent raised a single hand, stopping him dead. Vincent’s chest heaved as he watched Clara administer chest compressions, her face drenched in sweat, her voice whispering fierce, desperate encouragement into the child's ear.

"Fight, Mia. Don't you dare let them win. Fight, baby, come on!"

At 3:14 AM, the frantic rhythm of the monitor stabilized into a steady, rhythmic beep. Mia’s body relaxed into a deep, natural slumber. The gray hue vanished from her skin, replaced by a faint, healthy pink.

Dr. Vance collapsed into an armchair, wiping his brow. "The crisis is passed. The charcoal absorbed the remaining alkaloid before it crossed the cardiac threshold. She... she’s going to live."

Clara leaned against the medical cart, her legs trembling so violently she nearly fell. Before she could hit the floor, a pair of strong, steel-like arms caught her.

She looked up into Vincent Moretti’s face. He was inches away. The scent of expensive cologne, rain, and cold tobacco washed over her. His hands gripped her waist with steady, protective strength.

"You saved her," Vincent whispered, his voice thick with an emotion he had clearly not felt in half a decade. "Twice."

Clara pulled back gently, establishing her boundaries even as exhaustion threatened to swallow her. "She saved herself. She held on."

Before Vincent could reply, the secure terminal on the wall chimed with an encrypted alert. Marco stepped forward, his face grim as he checked the screen.

"Boss. It's Julian. He just initiated an emergency syndicate broadcast. He's claiming that rival factions from the Russian Bratva raided the main manor two hours ago and abducted Mia. He has called a full council meeting at the docks warehouse for dawn to declare open war."

Vincent’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom. "He wants an all-out war with the Russians. While we slaughter each other, he will take control of the ports and the bank accounts."

"And if Mia's body is discovered in the river tomorrow," Clara added, her voice chilling, "he will blame the Russians for her murder, solidifying his reign as the righteous avenger."

Vincent smiled—a cold, terrifying baring of teeth that made Elena whimper from the doorway.

"Julian thinks he has written the final act," Vincent murmured, adjusting the platinum cufflinks at his wrists. "He forgot that I am the author of this nightmare."

He turned to Clara, his gaze intense and unwavering. "Clara. I need you to stay by my daughter’s side. But I also need your courage one more time."

Clara crossed her arms, defying the chill that ran down her spine. "What are you planning, Vincent?"

May you like

"Julian needs a body to prove his story," Vincent said softly. "We are going to give him one. But not Mia's."
