Chapter 2 - The Fortress of Glass and Blood

The interior of the armored SUV smelled of expensive leather, gun oil, and sterile tension. Vincent sat across from Clara, his eyes never leaving Mia, who lay wrapped in heated wool blankets across Clara’s lap. Elena sat curled in the corner of the leather bench, clutching a hot thermos of coffee a bodyguard had handed her with hands that would not stop shaking.
Clara worked with methodical, frantic efficiency. "I need an IV kit, normal saline, activated charcoal, and atropine if you have it," she demanded, barking orders at the terrifying men who answered to the city's most feared criminal.
Vincent snapped his fingers at the man in the front passenger seat—his head of personal security, a scar-faced giant named Marco. "Radio Dr. Vance at the private clinic. Tell him if the medical bay at the safehouse isn't fully operational in ten minutes, I'll bury him."
"Right away, boss," Marco replied, his voice strained as he spoke rapidly into an encrypted radio.
Vincent leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees, his piercing gaze locking onto Clara. "You. You were at St. Jude’s. The night Sarah died."
Clara didn't look up from checking Mia's breathing. "Clara Mendoza. And yes. I was the one who held her hand when you couldn't bear to look at the monitor."
A flash of genuine pain crossed Vincent's stony features before vanishing behind iron control. "You never cashed the check I sent. You never used the token I gave you. Why did my daughter have that phone?"
"I gave it to her," a weak voice murmured from Clara’s lap.
Both Vincent and Clara looked down. Mia was looking up at her father with heavy, tear-filled eyes. "Mommy told me before she went to the stars... she said if the house ever became scary, and Daddy was far away, to press the green button on the phone in her jewelry box. She said an angel named Clara would answer."
Vincent inhaled sharply, as if a silver blade had been driven between his ribs. Sarah had left that emergency line for their daughter, knowing the dark, bloody world Vincent ruled would eventually cast its shadow over their child.
"Who was in the room when you drank the milk, Mia?" Vincent asked, his voice softening to a gentle, heartbreaking cadence that Clara never would have imagined a mafia boss could possess.
"Just Uncle Julian," Mia whispered, shivering despite the heat radiating through the SUV. "He smiled. He told me it was special sweet milk to help me dream. Then my tummy hurt real bad... and two strange men picked me up from my bed. Uncle Julian told them to throw me in the river where no one would find me."
In the front seat, Marco’s knuckles turned white on the steering wheel. "Boss... Julian is currently at the estate. He reported thirty minutes ago that Mia was safely asleep in the nursery."
The atmosphere inside the vehicle dropped below freezing. Vincent didn't shout. He didn't smash anything. He simply pulled a sleek black Beretta from beneath his jacket, checked the chamber with a smooth, practiced motion, and slid it back into place.
"We don't go to the main estate," Vincent said, his voice flat, devoid of humanity. "We go to the penthouse fortress on 5th. No one knows that location except Marco."
"Boss, what about the guards at the estate?" Marco asked quietly.
"Julian has turned them," Vincent said. "If he dared to touch my blood, he has already secured the perimeter of the manor. He is waiting for morning to declare her missing—or dead—and step into the vacuum."
Vincent turned his gaze toward Elena, the terrified waitress who looked ready to faint. "What is your name, girl?"
"E-Elena... Elena Cruz, sir," she stammered, shrinking into the leather upholstery.
"You took off your own coat to warm my child in an alley. You stayed when any other rat in this city would have run." Vincent reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a thick envelope of hundred-dollar bills, and tossed it into her lap. "That is for your rent tonight. Tomorrow, you will never work another shift in a diner again. But until this night ends, your silence is the price of your life. Do you understand?"
Elena nodded vigorously, clutching the envelope to her chest.
Clara adjusted the blanket around Mia’s shoulders, feeling the girl's fever spike. "She doesn't have time for your power plays, Vincent. The poison is entering her vascular system. If we don't pump her stomach and counteract the toxin within forty minutes, she will suffer irreversible neurological damage."
Vincent looked at Clara, his cold eyes searching hers. For the first time in his life, someone was speaking to him without fear, demanding obedience rather than begging for mercy.

"Drive faster, Marco," Vincent commanded. "Or I will shoot you myself."
