Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

At 6:30 AM, mist rolled across the manicured lawns of the Moretti estate like a thick white shroud.

Dr. Harrison Blake’s black Mercedes SUV, followed by an unmarked private ambulance, swept through the open gates and pulled up to the grand front entrance.

Blake stepped out of the vehicle, his silver hair impeccably combed, his medical bag in hand. He wore a look of triumphant gravity—the look of a savior arriving to rescue two helpless children from their unstable father.

Julianna met him at the double oak doors, wearing an elegant black silk robe.

“Harrison, thank God,” she said loudly, staging her performance for the security cameras. “Vincent finally called for help. The boys had seizures an hour ago. He realized he had no choice.”

“Tragic, but inevitable,” Blake said smoothly, shaking his head with manufactured sorrow. “The neurodegenerative decline had reached the terminal threshold. We must transfer them to Mount Sinai immediately. Where is Vincent?”

“In the main living room,” Julianna said, leading the way. “He looks completely broken. I think he’s finally accepted reality.”

They walked into the massive, two-story living room. Floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the fog-drenched terrace.

In the center of the room sat Vincent Moretti in a high-backed leather chair.

Beside him stood Mrs. Harper, her hands clasped in front of her, her face pale and silent.

And standing right behind Vincent’s chair, with her arms crossed, was me.

Dr. Blake frowned when he saw me. A sneer touched his lips. “Miss Morgan. I see you’re still here. I assume you finally realized your amateur holistic remedies were useless against a complex pediatric pathology?”

I didn't answer. I simply smiled.

Blake turned to Vincent. “Vincent, my friend. I know this is devastating. But the transport team is outside. We need to move Lucas and Leo immediately. Every minute counts.”

“Where are the boys, Harrison?” Vincent asked softly.

“They’re in the ambulance staging area, being prepped by my paramedics,” Blake said smoothly.

“No, they’re not,” Vincent said.

Blake paused, his eyes narrowing. “Vincent, what are you talking about?”

From the adjoining library, the double doors opened.

Marcus walked in, holding Lucas and Leo by their hands.

The boys were dressed in clean, warm flannel pajamas. They were still pale, but the grayish, sunken hollows under their eyes had begun to fade. Lucas was holding a half-eaten warm blueberry muffin. Leo was smiling, clutching a toy dinosaur.

Neither of them was on a stretcher. Neither of them had an IV line.

And when they saw Dr. Blake, both boys stopped and tucked themselves behind Marcus’s legs.

Blake’s face shifted. A crack appeared in his polished veneer. “Vincent... what is this? Those boys are critically ill! They shouldn't be out of bed!”

“They were ill, Harrison,” I spoke up, stepping forward into the morning light. “Because you were pumping organophosphates into their bedroom through an automated aerosol canister in the ventilation duct.”

Julianna gasped, taking an instinctive step back. “What nonsense is this? Vincent, she’s insane!”

“And because,” I continued, my voice echoing off the vaulted marble ceiling, “you were paying Mrs. Harper to lace their morning broth with concentrated solanidine drops to activate the toxin.”

Blake’s jaw locked. His arrogance flared, his silver eyebrows pulling together in disdain. “This is slander! You are an uneducated domestic employee making wild, paranoid accusations! Vincent, call your security and remove this lunatic!”

“Security is already here, Dr. Blake,” Vincent said, standing up.

He didn't yell. He didn't rush them. He simply raised his right hand.

From the surrounding corridors, four men in tactical gear with federal law enforcement badges stepped into the living room, their sidearms drawn and lowered at their sides. Behind them, two uniformed Connecticut State Troopers blocked the main entrance.

Blake spun around, his medical bag dropping from his hand with a heavy, sickening thud.

Julianna’s face drained of every drop of blood. She turned to run toward the terrace, but Marcus was already there, blocking the exit with his massive frame.

“Julianna Vance,” the lead federal agent announced, his voice booming through the room. “Harrison Blake. You are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit premeditated murder, corporate espionage, and aggravated assault on minors. Put your hands behind your backs.”
