Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Trap

Julianna Vance was sleeping in the west guest suite on the second floor, completely oblivious that her network of lies had collapsed beneath her feet.

She believed Mrs. Harper had successfully recovered the poisoned vitamin bottles and the tainted broth. She believed Dr. Blake was waiting at a nearby hotel, preparing an emergency ex-parte filing with a corrupt family court judge at 8:00 AM to seize temporary custody of the boys due to Vincent’s “erratic, paranoid behavior.”

She didn't know that Marcus, Vincent’s head of security, had already cloned her personal phone while she was in the shower three hours earlier.

In Vincent’s private office, the forensic files were laid out across the mahogany desk. Beside them sat audio recordings of Mrs. Harper’s complete, tearful confession, sworn and signed in front of a private notary Vincent had helicoptered into the estate at 3:00 AM.

Next to the confession were the toxicology results from the private lab in Manhattan:

*Active agent in the oral drops: Concentrated Solanine and Carbamate derivative.*

*The canister aerosol: Synthetic activating enzyme.*

*Together: A lethal, slow-acting neurodegenerative cocktail designed to trigger cardiac arrest within eighteen months. Lucas and Leo had less than four weeks left to live under the protocol.*

Vincent sat behind the desk, his phone on speaker. On the other end of the line was the Chief of the State Police and the Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York—two men who owed their careers to Vincent Moretti’s political backing.

“We have everything, Vincent,” the AUSA said grimly over the speaker. “The money trail from Julianna Vance’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands to Dr. Harrison Blake’s private medical research LLC in Delaware is ironclad. Over two point four million dollars transferred over the past sixteen months. It’s conspiracy to commit premeditated murder of minors, wire fraud, and distribution of chemical toxins.”

“I don’t want a quiet arrest at dawn,” Vincent said, his voice flat, emotionless, and colder than dry ice. “I want Harrison Blake here. Call him. Tell him the boys have taken a critical turn for the worse. Tell him his transport team has been cleared by my security to enter the estate.”

The federal prosecutor paused on the line. “Vincent... are you sure you want him on the property?”

Vincent looked up at me. I stood across from him, holding a fresh mug of black coffee.

“I am very sure,” Vincent replied. “Because when the handcuffs go on, I want them to look into the eyes of the children they tried to bury.”
