Chapter 6 - The Sister's Shadow

The revelation hung in the air like a hangman’s noose.

Vincent didn’t flinch, but I saw the devastating blow strike his chest. Isabella’s sister. The aunt who had held the twins at their baptism. The woman who had given the eulogy at Isabella’s funeral, weeping uncontrollably while promising to watch over the boys forever.

“Explain,” Vincent commanded, his voice shaking with a terrifying stillness. “Every word. If you lie, Eleanor, you will never see the outside of a federal penitentiary.”

Mrs. Harper was shivering so violently she could barely keep her balance on the floor.

“It started... it started three months after Isabella died,” she stammered, clutching her chest. “Julianna came to me. She knew about my grandson, Toby. Toby has acute lymphocytic leukemia. The experimental treatments in Switzerland were sixty thousand dollars a round... my family was drowning in debt. We were going to lose him.”

She looked up at Vincent with hollow, haunted eyes.

“Julianna paid for everything. She wired two hundred thousand dollars directly to the clinic in Zurich. Toby went into remission. I thought she was an angel. I thought she was doing it out of the goodness of her heart.”

“And then the debt came due,” I said quietly.

Mrs. Harper nodded, tears soaking her collar. “Sixteen months ago, she came to my quarters. She brought Dr. Blake with her. They told me... they told me Mr. Moretti was planning to cut the Vance family out of Isabella’s trust fund. Julianna said Vincent was losing his mind from grief, that he was becoming reckless with the boys’ future. Dr. Blake gave me small vials of clear liquid.”

“What did he tell you it was?” Vincent demanded.

“He said it was a mild sedative!” she wept. “He said it was just to keep the boys calm and lethargic so the court would deem Vincent unfit to care for them alone! He swore on his medical license it wouldn't cause permanent harm! All I had to do was add four drops to their morning bone broth and their evening milk! Julianna promised that once she was appointed legal co-guardian, she would take the boys to a private estate in France, raise them in luxury, and ensure my family was taken care of for life!”

“And the vent?” I asked. “Who put the canister in the ventilation shaft?”

“Dr. Blake,” Mrs. Harper choked out. “He installed it six months ago during what he called an ‘air-duct sanitation inspection.’ He told me it was an immunity booster. But last month... last month Lucas started coughing blood. I went to Julianna, I told her I couldn't do it anymore! I told her the boys were dying!”

“And what did she say?” Vincent’s voice dropped to a subterranean growl.

Mrs. Harper looked down at the floor, her voice barely audible.

“She laughed. She said... ‘If they die, Vincent will have no one left. And when he breaks, I’ll be the only one standing by his side to inherit everything Isabella left behind. If you stop now, Eleanor, I’ll tell the police you were poisoning them alone. And I will make sure Toby’s medical bills in Switzerland are canceled tomorrow morning.’”

A suffocating silence filled the room.

Vincent stood motionless. For three full seconds, he didn't breathe.

Then, he turned toward the door.

“Vincent, wait,” I said, stepping into his path.

His eyes were blood-red with rage. “Get out of my way, Claire. I’m going to kill her.”

“And then you go to prison,” I said, grabbing his arm firmly. My grip was tight, grounding him against the sheer torrent of his fury. “And Julianna’s high-priced lawyers spin it as a grief-stricken father having a psychotic breakdown. Who protects Lucas and Leo then? Blake takes custody. The trust takes over. You lose everything, Vincent. Look at me!”

He stopped. His chest heaved against his tailored shirt. His jaw worked, but he met my eyes.

“We don’t kill her,” I said coldly. “We destroy her. Legally, financially, and permanently. And we do it tonight.”
