Chapter 39 - The Admiral’s Bunker

Inside Bunker 4, the air hummed with high-frequency military transmitters, cooling fans, and the nervous tension of two dozen tech specialists staring at glowing blue tactical displays.

At the center of the command bridge stood Admiral Sterling Howell.

Four silver stars gleamed on the collar of his pristine dress blues. His hair was cropped silver, his face chiseled from five decades of ruthless military politics. On the giant panoramic display behind him, the green track of the USS *Vanguard* showed the destroyer cruising thirty miles off the foreign coastline, its Aegis radar system locked in pre-engagement staging.

"Commander Mercer," Admiral Howell said without turning around, his eyes glued to the countdown clock ticking down from 08:00 minutes. "Chief Vance always spoke highly of your tenacity. It’s a pity he couldn't teach you the value of strategic sacrifice."

"Sacrifice?" Nathan snarled, stepping forward. "You call framing your own country's ship for a massacre a sacrifice?"

Howell turned slowly, his eyes devoid of remorse, radiating the cold, psychopathic certainty of an empire architect. "The world is drifting away from American naval primacy. Washington politicians are weak, squabbling over budgets while our adversaries build super-fleets. History requires an ignition switch, Commander. The USS *Vanguard* will take minor damage, retaliate, and before sunrise, Congress will grant us the five-hundred-ship navy we need to rule the century."

"Your ignition switch has been pulled, Admiral," I said, walking straight onto the command platform. I reached into my tunic and slammed the authenticated cryptographic abort key—unlocked from Vance's titanium drive—onto the central console.

"That key is meaningless," Howell smirked, tapping his gold signet ring against the glass console. "The launch command is hard-coded into an isolated satellite satellite feed that only my retinal scan can abort. And in six minutes, the signal transmits."
