Chapter 23 - Ghost in the Shenandoah

By 0400 hours, we had slipped through the drainage culvert into the rain-swollen waters of the Shenandoah River. The storm masked our passage as we hiked three miles through the dense pine wilderness to Nathan's hidden cache—an unmarked, four-wheel-drive diesel utility truck concealed beneath a camouflaged hunting blind.

As the engine rumbled to life, the heater blasted lukewarm air against my soaking wet combat blouse. My uniform was caked in mud, carbon soot, and Captain Ross’s blood, but I refused to take off the blouse. The golden eagles on my collar and the ribbon racks across my chest were reminders of the oath I had taken—an oath my biological family had betrayed for gold.

Nathan plugged our encrypted satellite transponder into the dashboard console. "The tactical team at Timber Ridge took casualties from our tripwires, but they've already sanitized the site. County dispatch is reporting a 'gas leak explosion' at the Mercer mountain property. The local sheriff is already calling us dead or missing."

"That's my father’s playbook," I said, staring through the rain-streaked windshield into the dark highway ahead. "He buys the local authorities, buries the fire under an insurance claim, and tells society I was an unstable veteran who couldn't handle the isolation. He thinks the mountain swallowed me whole."

"Let them think you're dead," Nathan muttered, shifting into gear. "It gives us twelve hours of tactical invisibility."

"Twelve hours is all I need," I replied, pulling up the digital files from the drive onto an air-gapped laptop. "The encrypted drive has an automated fail-safe. If Chief Vance’s master decryption key isn't entered into the Naval Criminal Investigative Service mainframe at Norfolk by noon tomorrow, the entire cache self-destructs to prevent unauthorized leaks."

"And where is Vance’s decryption key?" Nathan asked.

I looked down at the handwritten field notes Chief Vance had tucked into his personal effects before he was assassinated. One short line jumped out at me: *'The key rests where Evelyn won her first trial.'*

My breath hitched.

"The historic courthouse in Prince William County," I breathed. "The basement evidence vault. Chapter 8—the very room where I took my father to court and broke his illegal conservatorship over the estate. Chief Vance attended that trial in uniform. He was the only one who sat behind me in the gallery."

"They'll have the courthouse watched, Evelyn," Nathan warned.

"Let them watch," I said, checking the magazine of my sidearm with a sharp, mechanical click. "They think they're fighting an abandoned daughter. It’s time they remember they’re facing a Navy JAG officer."
