Chapter 27 - The Smoke and the Gavel

Every head in the packed courtroom whipped around.

The gasps began in the gallery and spread like wildfire to the bench. Several senior naval officers stood up in shock. My father dropped his crystal glass; it shattered on the parquet floor, splashing water across his hand-stitched leather shoes.

"Evelyn...?" Marcus Mercer whispered, his arrogant, aristocratic face draining of every drop of color. "Impossible..."

Rear Admiral Bradley Vance slammed his gavel down so hard the sound reverberated like a pistol shot. "Master-at-Arms! What is the meaning of this intrusion?! Commander Mercer is currently listed as AWOL and a person of interest in a catastrophic domestic incident! Remove her from this chamber immediately!"

Two MPs moved toward me, but I didn't flinch. I reached into my service dress blouse and produced the brass decryption drive along with the Joint Chiefs warrant.

"Belay that order, Master-at-Arms!" I commanded, my voice carrying the resonant, thunderous authority of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. "By authority of the Secretary of Defense and the Judge Advocate General of the Navy, I am executing an Article 32 investigative seizure under suspicion of capital treason, conspiracy to defraud the United States government, and premeditated murder!"

The courtroom erupted into pandemonium. Reporters, naval officers, and military jurists surged forward.

"She’s delusional!" Rear Admiral Vance roared, his face turning an apoplectic purple. "She’s grieving her mentor and projecting her instability onto high-ranking leadership! Baliff, disarm her!"

Suddenly, the side door of the judge’s chambers burst open.

Stepping into the courtroom was not another mercenary, but Vice Admiral Sarah Sterling—the Inspector General of the Navy—flanked by six heavily armed federal agents from NCIS and the FBI.

"Sit down, Bradley," Vice Admiral Sterling commanded in a voice of pure iron. "Commander Mercer sent an off-site transmission to my private server forty-five minutes ago from Prince William County. The decryption key has already unlocked Chief Vance’s master logs. Every offshore wire transfer, every doctored cargo manifest, and the purchase orders for the synthetic neurotoxins delivered to your private quarters have just been authenticated by the Department of Justice."

Rear Admiral Vance slowly sank back into his high-backed leather chair, his hands shaking violently.

My father tried to scramble toward the gallery exit, but Nathan stepped into his path, folding his arms across his broad chest like an immovable iron pillar.

"Marcus Mercer," I said, walking down the center aisle, my heels clicking like the ticking of a death clock. "You spent thirty years telling this state that I was a disgrace to our bloodline because I chose to wear the cloth of our nation instead of your corrupted gold."

I stopped right in front of him, looking down into his terrified, withered eyes.

"Today, this uniform is sentencing you to the rest of your life in federal prison."
