Chapter 8 - The Whistleblower’s Shadow

Special Agent Thomas Miller of the Department of Justice sat on the tailgate of my truck while paramedics bandaged a cut along my cheekbone. The fire had been doused by the local volunteer department, and two agents were methodically bagging half-burned receipts and bank records from the gravel.

"You're lucky to be alive, Mr. Reed," Agent Miller said, flipping through a charred ledger with gloved hands. "Marcus Vance isn't a petty vandal. He runs criminal enforcement for three shell corporations Victor Bell controls."

"Who called you?" I asked, wincing as the medic taped a gauze pad over my brow. "I didn't have time to dial 911."

Miller pointed across the lawn.

Sitting in the back of an unlit sheriff's cruiser, wrapped in a brown wool emergency blanket, was Chase Bell.

"He called the tip line from a payphone near the high school twenty minutes ago," Miller said quietly. "Gave us the address, the gate code, and told us Vance was destroying evidence. The kid bought you your life tonight, Arthur."

I stood up, shaking off the paramedic, and walked slowly over to the cruiser. Chase saw me coming. He pulled the blanket tighter around his shoulders, looking through the half-open window with hollow, exhausted eyes.

"You gave them the gate code," I said, leaning against the door frame.

"He was going to kill you," Chase whispered, his voice trembling. "My dad called from the holding cell. He told me to pack my bags and go to my aunt's in Florida. He told me not to worry about you, because Vance would 'handle the problem.' That’s when I knew... everything you said in the auditorium was true. He didn't care about anything. Not even me."

I reached through the window and rested my hand on the boy's shoulder. It was tense, like coiled wire, then slowly relaxed under the weight of an honest touch.

"You did the right thing, son," I said. "Doing the right thing hurts like hell when you first start. But it’s the only thing that keeps you clean."

A tear tracked through the dirt on Chase's cheek. "The school board... they're holding a special emergency trial tomorrow morning to revoke my father's tenure and dissolve the council. Vance’s lawyers are bringing hired protesters to shut down the meeting. They want to claim the whole thing is a political witch hunt."

"Let them bring their protesters," I said, feeling the iron return to my spine. "We’ll bring the truth."
