Chapter 10 - Blood Against Blood

Victor Bell went rigid in his leather chair. The smug mask of untouchable wealth cracked, revealing the panicked animal beneath.
"Chase?" Victor stammered, half-rising from his seat. "Chase, what are you doing? Sit down! Get out of here!"
"Mr. Chairman," Chase said, completely ignoring his father. He stopped at the witness podium, placed his hands on the brass rail, and looked directly at the school board. "My name is Chase Bell. I am a senior at Cumberland High. And I am turning over the secondary encryption key for my father’s offshore ledger."
A collective gasp swept through the three hundred people in the gallery. Camera shutters clicked like a swarm of locusts.
"Chase, shut your mouth!" Victor roared, lunging forward, his hands slamming onto the defense table. "I gave you everything! You ungrateful little bastard, I built an empire for you!"
"You didn't build it for me, Dad," Chase said, his voice ringing with absolute, devastating clarity. "You built it for yourself. You stole from people who didn't have enough to eat so you could buy me a sports car I didn't earn. You told me that people like Mr. Reed were garbage under our tires."
Chase turned and looked directly at me. His eyes were clear, free of the cruel arrogance that had choked him forty-eight hours ago.
"Mr. Reed didn't have a diploma," Chase continued, turning back to the board. "He worked twelve-hour shifts at a transmission shop, came to school smelling like motor oil, and sat in an undersized plastic chair just to learn how to do basic algebra. And yesterday morning, I taped a diaper to his desk and ripped up the notebook his daughter bought him for his birthday."
The room was deathly quiet. You could hear the faint hum of the heating vents.
"I thought I was a king," Chase whispered. "Turns out I was just a coward with an expensive coat. Here is the flash drive, gentlemen. It contains the real testing results for the STEM center’s foundations, the bribe payments to County Commissioner Harris, and the slush fund Victor Bell used to close down the adult learning annex."
Victor Bell collapsed back into his chair, his jaw hanging slack, staring at his only son as if he were a stranger who had just slipped a knife between his ribs.

The chairman brought the gavel down with the force of an executioner’s axe. "The evidence is admitted. Bailiffs, take Victor Bell into custody on federal witness tampering and conspiracy charges."
